Aloha Friends,
Thank You for making May a fabulous month with your birthday wishes and letters. Many of you commented on the “Avalon” color in your replies.
Moanalua Friends, come join me at Salt Lake Public Library for the 25th Anniversary of the 99 foot mural entitled, "Moanalua Memories". This was my first State Art Commission and it looks just like the day we installed it back in 1999. The picture above was taken for Hana Hou Magazine, prior to the installation of the "Moanalua Memories" mural.
A major life event is taking place for me at the Bishop Museum. I am completing a mural for the permanent exhibit entitled "Lele O Manu". You can read a bit about it below, and even more in next month's Art News letter.
The exhibit opens on July 12.
The Art Tip "Passing the Torch" is about encouraging others to carry on the work the work that you love and live for.
The featured Painting in Paradise tv episode is
"Painting with Knives" starring artist Michael Powell.
Since completing the Bishop Museum Mural I've just added
New Painting Workshops each month starting in July. These are small group, intensive workshops where you'll learn lots and have a painting to show for it. Be the first to show up for these limited opportunities.
There's a New Murals Section on my website that showcases several Community Mural Projects I've done over the years.
Do you have a place for some large-scaled art???
I'd like to send a warm Congratulations to Crissia Vaughn for her first Art Show at Sea Life Park, and a warm Aloha 'oe to artist David Friedman for his life's work bringing color to the forefront of his art.
Our Favorite Photos are a magical mix of Past and Present Pics that I hope you'll love as much as I do.
At age 62, the story of my life now seems to have been written from the back to the front. I'll explain this in more detail in my upcoming book: "I'll Tell You Later".
(That's not the actual title, but a working title.)
Want to know the actual title?
Hehe...I'll Tell You Later.
With Aloha from me,

- ART TIP -
Paint Your Passion

What should an artist feel when others do similar work?
In my graduating year of high school, I received Scholastic Scholarship opportunities to what were deemed some of the best art colleges in America. I accepted one to the Otis/Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles. During my first year there, I decided to return to Hawaii and begin my professional art career “painting what I love”.
I won’t go deep into my experience at “Otis” but I felt so many people were throwing crap (art) on the walls to try and get a response. My own art was getting deranged because that’s what I thought would get me better grades. (You can read more about this period in my upcoming book).
In recent years I saw more people producing Wonderful Wildlife Art. Folks have asked me if I am concerned about people imitating my art?
My response is that if someone really cares about nature awareness and conservation they should rejoice in the knowing that more artists are doing work to support that cause. I’m thankful that my work has influenced others and now there are more folks doing great nature art that promotes wildlife awareness. This makes me feel better about painting other subjects that I love and am excited about.
As for passing the torch, one day I will really do that, and hope that the fire burns strong in those who choose to carry it on.

Patrick Ching to Paint Backdrop for Haruo Uchiyama's Permanent Forest Bird Exhibit
When Haruo Uchiyama presented his idea for an exhibit of his Hawaii bird carvings to then Princess Michiko of Japan, she showed him an art piece that she had by Patrick Ching entitled, Hidden Valley.
Haruo then contacted Patrick to paint the background for his Hawaiian forest bird carvings. This exhibit is a combination of Haruo’s birds, a modified version of Patrick's Hidden Valley painting, and the craftsmanship of the Museum’s exhibit team.
As a young artist Patrick was thrilled to meet famed wildlife artist Guy Cohaleach at the Bishop Museum. This meeting was set up by ornithology curator, Dr. Sheila Conant, and Zoology director, Dr. Allen Allison, who told Patrick to "Bring Something to Show him". The only thing Patrick had on the easel was an unfinished background of the Hidden Valley Painting. At the time, it had no birds or foreground on it.
Mr. Cohaleach was initially skeptical to see it, and told the director "If I don't like it, I'm gonna say so..."
That night, Guy Cohaleach ended up ranting and raving about Patrick's painting to the people attending his presentation.
Now, Patrick is completing painting that same scene for the
Lele O Manu permanent exhibit featuring Japan's master bird carver, Haruo Uchiyama's Hawaiian forest bird sculptures.

Patrick put the finishing touches to the mural during FestPAC at the Bishop Museum from June 10th -14th, at which time he interacted with the public and even let a few spectators add some paint to the mural.
The permanent exhibit entitled Lele o Manu opens on July 12th and also features a mural of pre-historic Hawaiian birds by
Dr. Julian Hume of England. The mural was donated by the Smithsonian Museum. See next month's newsletter for the interesting story about this landmark exhibit.
