FROM THE DEACON'S BENCH

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

So it seems sometimes, constrained as we are by calendars and iPhones and computers and school and work and meals and dishes and all that goes into getting through the day. “The world is too much with us,” said Wordsworth and often we know it all too well. And so it happened for me in preparing the last of our Easter Adult Forum programs. What do we say about Easter that will shed some light on our life’s journey all these years later? And where is God when we are in the midst of living life’s crazies?

But I got to remembering some of those moments when all the craziness fell away and there was only the wonder that God graces us with, the wonder that is ours so often and we miss it. Things like the birth of a child or the time we lay in the grass outside in the dark and counted meteors. Things like the music of the choir carrying us to join our voices with the angels and archangels and all the company of heaven. The trees come green after months of bare gray branches. The sight of lightening in the clouds far, far out to sea. A fox running through our back yard or a hawk circling overhead. I’ve seen them and they have happened but how quickly I forget!

And so I’ve decided to keep an Awe Journal, a journal in which I write down those moments, the moments that have reminded me of who we really are, those moments which I need to remember. Because the world may be too much with us but God is too, bringing Easter resurrection to our deadened souls. Or, as Wordsworth might say:

So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

CONNECTION

The King of Instruments: an Evening with Harrison & Harrison's Managing Director Andrew Scott

Thursday, May 23, 7:00 p.m.

All are invited to attend a presentation about Harrison & Harrison Organ builders, given by H&H's own Managing Director, Andrew Scott. Mr. Scott has worked at H&H for almost 30 years, starting out as a tuner and progressing to head voicer before becoming the head of the firm in 2022. He will articulate H&H's philosophy toward organ building, dive into their process from start to finish when they take on a new project, and discuss the organ to be installed at Christ Church in 2026. The program will last about an hour with time for Q&A, and will conclude with cookies and lemonade on the porch.

In the Spirit: Monday, May 27 at the Sandfly 5-Spot

Second and Fourth Mondays, 5:30 p.m.

"In the Spirit" is a discussion group for those who seek to deepen their faith through meaningful conversations. Join us this Monday at The 5-Spot in Sandfly (7360 Skidaway Rd), where you can grab a drink or a bite as we spend time together. We'll gather at 5:30 p.m. and begin our discussion at 6:00.

This week's topic: Who's Getting into Heaven?

Clouds, halos, good deeds, jokes about St. Peter at the pearly gates: these pop culture notions of heaven can sometimes cloud our understanding of the real thing. What's the deal with heaven? What is it? Who's going there, and how?

Questions to Ponder:
  • What do you think of when you think of heaven? What images come to mind, and where do these come from?
  • Do you think there are "entry requirements" for heaven? If so, what are they?
  • How does heaven fit in with the rest of what we believe, especially about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus?
  • What does heaven have to do with grace?

If you have questions or would like to receive emails about upcoming In the Spirit topics, please contact the Rev. Samantha McKean.

Baptism of Austin Wheeler Southerland on Sunday

Austin Wheeler Southerland was born on May 25, 2023, to Carson and Sarah Southerland of Bluffton, South Carolina. After a years-long struggle with infertility, Austin was born after a successful IVF cycle. Carson is an airplane mechanic at Gulfstream who was raised in Moorestown, New Jersey. Sarah is an attorney born and raised in South Carolina. The couple met while both living in Miami, but moved to South Carolina to be closer to family in 2014. In keeping with the tradition Sarah's parents started, Austin has three godparents:  Ken and Mary Depew, of Moorestown, New Jersey, and Dana Meadows, of Rincon. Austin will wear a baptismal gown knitted by his great grandmother and namesake, Mary Wheeler Zelle. Christ Church is such a loving, open, and accepting place where Austin is blessed to grow. As a cradle Episcopalian, Sarah is so excited for Austin to begin this journey with the Lord, but even more excited that it will be in the midst of this congregation.
