Tri - Agency Implementation of the Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern

In accordance with the Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) Policy, grant applications submitted by a university or affiliated research institution to the federal granting agencies and the Canada Foundation for Innovation involving research that aims to advance a Sensitive Technology Research Area will not be funded if any of the researchers involved in activities supported by the grant are currently affiliated with, or in receipt of funding or in-kind support, from a Named Research Organization.

The federal granting agencies are implementing the STRAC Policy in a harmonized manner, to funding opportunities that launch as of May 1, 2024. Further guidance, including detailed procedures and a list of funding opportunities that will apply this Policy, have been published through the Tri-agency Guidance on the STRAC Policy webpage.

Please consult the appropriate funding opportunity literature to determine whether the STRAC Policy applies and, where applicable, for any additional information on procedures to be followed.

The federal granting agencies are committed to providing Canada’s research community with the most up to date information and best practices designed to reduce research security risks. We are offering webinars to help familiarize the research community with this new policy.

For Academic Staff

May 23: 2024 NFRF: NordForsk-Led International Joint Initiative on Sustainable Development in the Arctic - Registration

This international joint initiative represents a collaboration among research funders from Canada, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States. The Arctic region has seen and continues to see rapid and drastic changes, mostly due to climate change, which has a bigger impact in the Arctic than in the rest of the world. Declining sea ice has also opened possibilities of new transport routes, new opportunities for resource extraction, and led to increased international interest in the region. The direct effects of climate change, as well as these indirect ones, have a significant impact on ecosystems, Arctic communities and traditional ways of living. Through interdisciplinary research projects that include Indigenous perspectives, this call will leverage expertise across Arctic countries to explore approaches to sustainable development in the Arctic, considering aspects such as security, natural resources and societal changes. Registration is required. Full applications will be due in Fall 2024.

Amount / Duration: $800,000/yr for up to 4 years plus 25% indirect costs.

Contact: NFRF-FNFR@chairs-chaires.gc.ca

June 13: SSHRC Connection Grants

These grants provide support for workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes, or other events or outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects.

Amount / Duration: $7,000 - $25,000 (events); $7,000 - $50,000 (outreach); up to 1 year

Contact: 1-613-943-1007; connection@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca

**NOTE: there will be no August competition in 2024. The next competition is November 2024.

June 23: Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence for Canadian Veterans (CPCoE)

The CPCoE funds research that improves the well-being of Veterans, and their families, living with chronic pain. Three funding competitions are now open:

1) Assessing and Improving Quality of Life of Canadian Veterans Living with Chronic Pain and Common Comorbidities; 2) Health System and Policy Innovations for Canadian Veterans Living with Chronic Pain; 3) Understanding the Diverse Experiences of Canadian Veterans Living with Chronic Pain.

Amount / Duration: $450,000 total funding available for 3 possible projects for each competition; for 1 - 2 years

Contact: research@vcp-vdc.ca

August 20: New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Exploration - NOI
The goal of the Exploration stream is to inspire high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research. Exploration grants support research that pushes boundaries into exciting new areas. Researchers are encouraged to think “outside of the box” and undertake research that would defy current paradigms; brings disciplines together in unexpected ways and from bold, innovative perspectives; and has the potential to be disruptive or deliver game-changing impacts. A Research Activity Form is required for both the NOI and full application. An NOI must be completed to progress to the full application, due by October 29, 2023.

Amount / Duration: $125k / year for up to 2 years
Contact: NFRF-FNFR@chairs-chaires.gc.ca

August 27: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth. The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to: 1) attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally, 2) develop their leadership potential, and 3) position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow. Fellowships are equally distributed across CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC.

*** If MRU is the host institution, send the entire application package to the ORSCE by August 27 so that we may compose an institutional letter of endorsement to include in the final submission to Banting by September 17.
Amount / Duration: $70,000 / year for up to 2 years
