‘Old-Time Photography Day’ scheduled at Former Governors’ Mansion
BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to “Old-Time Photography Day” Saturday, June 22, 1-4 p.m. at the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site, Bismarck. Join us as we celebrate photography and its use to record the history of the Former Governors' Mansion for 140 years. The event is free, and lemonade and cookies will be served. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Dress in period clothing if you wish.
Observe historical photographic processes throughout the afternoon and make a photogram to take home using the cyanotype process invented in 1842. All materials will be supplied.
Fargo-based photographer and artist Kary Janousek will demonstrate the Victorian wet plate collodion process invented in 1851. Learn the basic steps of creating an image, why this form of photography is still relevant, and how she uses the process to bring the past into the present.
Former Governors’ Mansion site supervisor Johnathan Campbell, a photographer and artist, will demonstrate how to shoot and develop film using vintage cameras dating from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Try the cameras and observe the film development process.
Bring your historical North Dakota photographs to the event. Matt Ely, photo archivist with the North Dakota State Archives, will be on hand to discuss their possible inclusion in the state historical photograph collections as original or digital copies.
The Former Governors’ Mansion, 320 East Ave. B, Bismarck, is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free. The mansion is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 12-4 p.m. For more information, contact Site Supervisor Johnathan Campbell, 701.328.9528 or shsfgm@nd.gov.
