ANNOUNCEMENTS

Round 3 for MacArthur 100&Change
MacArthur Foundation launched a new round of its 100&Change competition for a single $100 million grant to help solve the world's most critical social challenges. The opportunity is open to organizations and collaborations in any field, anywhere in the world. Proposals must identify a problem and offer a solution that promises significant and durable change. OVPR is requesting interested applicants to submit a call for intent to gauge campus-wide interest and connect applicants to resources that would be helpful in preparing applications. Online applications are due to the sponsor by August 15.

U-M Foundation Relations will host an information session on the 100&Change competition, including insights learned from prior competitions and strategies for preparing a strong proposal. Representatives from interested teams are encouraged to attend. Register for the information session on Friday, June 28, 10-11 am.

Seeking projects for the 2024 SPARC FAIR Codeathon
The NIH Common Fund's Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) program aims to characterize how the autonomic nervous system controls organ function in order to catalyze the development of more effective neuromodulation therapies. The SPARC Data and Resource Center invites you to submit your project ideas for the three-day in-the-cloud SPARC FAIR codeathon August 10-12 with a total prize pool of $50,000.

UROP is now recruiting Project Proposals for 2024-2025
Would you like help getting a new research project started or expediting a current project? Do you want to gain experience mentoring undergraduate students in research? The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is now accepting research project submissions for the next academic year. Beginning September 4, you will have the opportunity to interview and select the students you wish to invite into your project. UROP covers the students’ compensation through work-study funds or academic credit. Supplementary research funding of $500-800 per student is available to cover research-related expenses. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and advanced graduate students are eligible to be UROP research mentors. Contact the UROP Director, Dr. Michelle Ferrez (mdferrez@umich.edu), with questions.

Applications open for the 2024 LARCC program
The Laboratory Animal Research Coordinator Certification (LARCC) Program, a unique education and networking opportunity designed to boost compliance knowledge across all aspects of the U-M Animal Care & Use Program, is currently accepting applications for its 2024 Cohort. Applications will be accepted through August 1. The 2024 LARCC Program will run every Wednesday, September 11 through November 13, from 8 am – 12 pm at the North Campus Research Complex. Upon program completion, individuals become certified U-M Laboratory Animal Research Coordinators (LARCs) who can provide guidance, training, and compliance assistance to others in their work area. Space is limited, so if you are interested in applying, please complete the brief LARCC application early to secure your spot. Please note that Principal Investigator approval is required to participate.

Save the Date! Researchpalooza on September 18
Hosted by the U-M Medical School Office of Research, Researchpalooza is an opportunity to meet, mingle and learn more about the many organizations that offer services to faculty, students, and staff. Researchpalooza will take place on September 18, 11 am - 2 pm, at 1150 West Medical Center Drive (on the north side of the MSRBs). If your unit is interested in exhibiting at Researchpalooza, reserve a table here. To learn more, visit Researchpalooza's website or contact Ann Curtis (accurtis@umich.edu).

Virtual Scoping Workshop: Shaping the Future of Mathematics Learning and Education
Funded by NSF in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the Walton Family Foundation, a free, online-only workshop on July 23-24 brings together expertise in the science of learning, education research, data science and AI to engage a community of interdisciplinary scientists, education researchers and education practitioners, with shared goals of advancing K-12 mathematics learning and education through innovative use of data science and AI. This workshop will explore major research questions about learning and teaching mathematics that would benefit from the building of a mathematics research and education data-sharing ecosystem. The workshop will inform future funding priorities to catalyze innovations in research and practice of K-12 math learning and education, and participants will be invited to collaborate on a synthesis report of the workshop discussions. Learn more and register.

RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT IN PRACTICE

Broader Impacts Toolkit
NSF requires a Broader Impacts (BI) statement in grant proposals that describes the potential positive effects of your research beyond your lab. BI statements need to address 1) how your work will benefit society, 2) how your work will help solve challenges facing communities, or 3) how you will partner with communities to expand the exchange of information, ideas, and expertise in ways that benefit society.

The BI Toolkit, available from the Center for Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS), provides free planning and evaluation resources to design and write a compelling BI statement. The resources include: OVPR's Public Engagement & Research Impacts team can support the design and development of BIs, grant proposals and public impact research projects.
