This month and every month, we honor the history, achievements, and ongoing fight for equality of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Over the years, Nevada Humanities has been fortunate to partner with talented local storytellers and artists who shared important stories from queer communities. In celebration of Pride Month, we’ve highlighted two of those stories below.

Rainbow Rodeo: Reno and the Gay Rodeo Movement
The Reno Gay Rodeo was a groundbreaking event that defied stereotypes and fostered community in 1976 Nevada. It became a beacon of inclusion and authenticity, igniting a legacy that continues to thrive today. Learn more about this piece of 2SLGBTQIA+ history from Carly Sauvageau, the editor for the documentary Rainbow Rodeo.
Queer Cities and their Temporary Monuments
Vegas-based artist Emily Budd penned a powerful essay about The Stonewall Group and a 1986 gay couple’s courageous mission to cultivate a queer utopia in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. The story is one of hope and resilience, and inspired Budd to sculpt “Memorial for Queer Rhyolite, a temporary monument to dreams in the dust,” in an effort to prolong the dream of a queer future in a small western town.

On June 19, Nevada Humanities celebrates Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although Juneteenth didn’t become an official national holiday until 2021, June 19 has been celebrated as a day of freedom, reflection, and joy within the Black American community since 1866. The day signifies the liberation of the last enslaved people in the Confederacy in Galveston, Texas, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth also serves as a reminder of the continued fight for equality and justice.
This Juneteenth, we invite you to honor the holiday with us by learning more about the Black American experience in Nevada. Check out these Nevada Humanities programs:
