SCHOOL HAS BEGUN!

A Saint Louis Sudbury School mom asked her son how he felt about going back to school this fall and he said, "School is almost as fun as my birthday." We completely agree!

The first several days of the school year were filled with reconnecting with friends, making motions in School Meeting, experimenting with watermelon recipes, playing the guitar, experiencing Judicial Committee meetings, organizing files, taking notes, cleaning, visiting a fabric store to gather materials for projects, making salsa from the fresh tomatoes in our garden, navigating boundaries, sharing games with new students, making donuts, fixing computers and stuffed animals, asking for help, remembering the rules, signing the code of conduct, getting certified to go off-campus, woodworking, painting, making slime, remembering to take breaks, running for committees, and much more. Plus, we are excited to welcome four new students this September!

We will continue to offer informational Zoom meetings and tours for prospective families throughout the year. Learn more about our
new admissions process here.

At Saint Louis Sudbury School, life is learning and learning is life. We value autonomy, dignity, and respect!

SUMMER HAPPENINGS

Saint Louis Sudbury School staff and volunteers attended the Global Self-Directed Democratic School Conference in Colorado in July! Hosted by Alpine Valley School (a Sudbury model school that has been thriving for 28 years), this incredible meeting brought together educators, students, and advocates of self-directed democratic schooling from around the world. We had an amazing time connecting with colleagues and learning about the field and returned to St. Louis with lots of ideas and energy for the new school year.

One of the highlights of the conference was the "Visionaries & Voices" presentation featuring talks by prominent leaders in the self-directed democratic education community. The talks will be available on Alpine Valley School's wonderful podcast in the coming months! The first talk, "How Trust Transforms Learning," is already available! Listen to Alpine Valley School founder Larry Welshon talk about how trust shapes the learning environment at their school, empowers students, and creates a foundation for personal growth and responsibility.

SUDBURY THOUGHTS

On the first day of school, a Sudbury mom said, "Our boys got into the car willingly to go to school and then they did not want to leave at the end of the day. It brought my heart a sense of peace."
