SSBCI TA Grants - RFA Delayed; Expected Later This Summer

The US Dept. of Treasury has made some changes to reporting on these grants which we're told will be appreciated. However, the request for applications will need to be modified. We'll keep you posted.

Through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA), the U.S. Treasury has awarded jurisdictions to provide technical assistance (TA), such as legal, accounting, and fiscal advisory services to small businesses. NYS via ESD will receive and administer the TA Grant Program.

Through a formal RFA process, ESD will select qualified providers to offer technical assistance to NYS small businesses, Socially and Economically Disadvantaged (SEDI) owned businesses and Very Small Businesses (VSBs).

The goal of this program is to help NYS small businesses secure capital through SSBCI lending programs.

For more information, see:  https://home.treasury.gov/system/files/136/SSBCI-Technical-Assistance-Reporting-Guidance.pdf.

Morgan Clark, Project Manager, Small Business Lending, at Empire State Development recently shared information on this effort with the board of the NYS CDFI Coalition.

She highlighted important information regarding flexibility around providing TA. Eligible TA providers may carry out the TA Grant Program award themselves, and/or make a subaward to a subrecipient to carry out the TA Grant Program award, or contract with legal, accounting and/or financial advisory firms to provide TA services.

Morgan shared her slide deck with more information, which you may view here.

Watch your inbox for the request for applications.

Community Capital: Race, Equity, and the Credit Union Movement

No margin - no mission ... What does it take to bring financial justice to communities of color?

Cliff Rosenthal, shaped by the movements of the 1960s, fought for decades against government indifference and systemic bias-finally seeing change come after the death of George Floyd. Michael McCray, a renowned whistle-blower, led an unprecedented court challenge to the unjust federal termination of his fraternity's Kappa Alpha Psi Federal Credit Union. Here for the first time you'll find the inside story of the landmark KAPFCU v NCUA federal court case. These stories will inspire all those working to fulfill the promise of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the financial system.

What’s Possible: Investing Now for Prosperous, Sustainable Neighborhoods

Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are uniquely positioned to support and sustain efforts to address urgent climate needs in their communities. The NYS CDFI Coalition’s 2024 keynote panel featured chapter authors from the upcoming publication titled “What’s Possible: Investing Now for Prosperous, Sustainable Neighborhoods,” and was moderated by an environmental justice pioneer. The book draws on the expertise of 30 leading climate and community development leaders who lay out the challenges facing communities on the front lines of climate change.

The Social Justice Investor

Andrea Longton was a valued collaborator in 2021 as the NYS CDFI Coalition explored opportunities to identify, educate, and activate philanthropists and investors who wanted to make an impact by supporting NYS CDFIs. Her new book, “The Social Justice Investor” (Broadleaf Books - April 23, 2024) is a step-by-step guide to personal finance for those interested in building wealth while also aligning their finance decisions with their values, intentions, and commitments to social justice. Whether you have $100 or $100 million in the bank, you have the power to change the world for the better.

Rear-View Reflections on Radical Change

You may remember Linda as the Consulting Executive Director of the NYS CDFI Coalition in 2019. She’s written a compelling new memoir, "Rear-View Reflections," which invites readers on a journey through 50 years of social movements that have left an indelible mark on our world. This collection of essays, nonfiction stories, and poems, crafted between 1972 and 2022, delivers a powerful call for unity, urging us to prioritize climate action for the sake of today's children and the generations to come. Intriguing and diverse, this book speaks to a wide audience, from young adults and working moms to grandparents, essay enthusiasts, political thinkers, progressive activists, and anyone deeply concerned about the urgent issue of climate change.
