SUNDAY

JUNE 9, 2024

Dear friends,

Glory to Jesus Christ! Слава Ісусу Христу!

In one of his books, Fr. Anthony Coniaris says this: “The eye is the window of the whole body. Eye here means the soul of a person. And we tend to see and hear things not as they are, but as we are. He who is filled with hate sees only hateful people. If we feel insecure inside, other people seem to threaten us. We are constantly judging others by ourselves. The thief is far more suspicious of others than is the honest man.”

How about the way we see ourselves? Why is it important that we see ourselves with the eyes of God? I read about a hotel manager who became so weary at being yelled at for every little discomfort or inconvenience that his guests experienced, because they wanted Ritz Carlton fancies at Motel 6 prices. During one especially uncomfortable exchange, he noticed that the woman who was blasting him looked oddly enough like a monkey. He couldn’t help but wonder if she knew how funny she looked as she contorted her face in anger. So he got a brilliant idea—he hung a large mirror directly behind the front desk, so that guests could see themselves as they interacted with the hotel clerks. Soon the anger and the temper-tantrums all but stopped. When people could see how rude and hateful they looked while they were yelling and screaming about something that was usually so inconsequential, they stopped yelling and screaming.

Have a great week,

Fr. Andre

READINGS FOR

SUNDAY, JUNE 9th

EPISTLE

A reading from the Letter of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans. (5: 1-10 )

Brothers and Sisters Now that we have been justified by faith, we are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have gained access by faith to the grace in which we now stand, and we boast of our hope for the glory of God. But not only that — we even boast of our afflictions! We know that affliction makes for endurance, and endurance for tested virtue, and tested virtue for hope. And this hope will not leave us disappointed, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. At the appointed time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for us godless men. It is rare that anyone should lay down his life for a just man, though it is barely possible that for a good man someone may have the courage to die. It is precisely in this that God proves his love for us: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Now that we have been justified by his blood, it is all the more certain that we shall be saved by him from God's wrath. For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him by the death of his Son, it is all the more certain that we who have been reconciled will be saved by his life.

GOSPEL

Matthew 6:22-34

The Lord said: "The eye is the body's lamp. If your eyes are good, your body will be filled with light; if your eyes are bad, your body will be in darkness. And if your light is darkness, how deep will the darkness be! No man can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other or be attentive to one and despise the other. You cannot give yourself to God and money. I warn you then: do not worry about your livelihood, what you are to eat or drink or use for clothing. Is not life more than food? Is not the body more valuable than clothes?

"Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Which of you by worrying can add a moment to his life-span? As for clothes, why be concerned? Learn a lesson from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work; they do not spin. Yet I assure you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was arrayed like one of these. If God can clothe in such splendor the grass of the field, which blooms today and is thrown on the fire tomorrow, will he not provide much more for you, O weak in faith! Stop worrying, then, over questions like, 'What are we to eat, or what are we to drink, or what are we to wear?' The unbelievers are always running after these things. Your heavenly Father knows all that you need. Seek first his kingship over you, his way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides. Enough, then, of worrying about tomorrow. Let tomorrow take care of itself. Today has troubles enough of its own."

UKRAINIAN IMMIGRATION STORIES THROUGH THE EYES OF DISPLACED YOUNG PEOPLE

Dear Parishioners,

As you might be aware, the students of our Ukrainian program at Bethlehem Catholic High School have launched a project – a book of Ukrainian immigration stories through the eyes of displaced young people.

We will continue to collect the stories until the end of this school year. We thank you for encouraging young people to share their stories with us and we kindly ask you to continue inviting high school Ukrainian displaced students to participate in the project. This book, shared by young witnesses of this horrible war time, will leave behind a legacy for future generations. Moreover, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), the Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, stated that this book would be much valuable for future generations. He also mentioned that the project itself, is a healing remedy for those who share their stories. The Patriarch was delighted with the project and gave his blessing to the students.

Information about the project

The goal is to publish a bilingual book with the stories of high school age Ukrainians from our Catholic school division, who arrived from different parts of Ukraine due to the full-scale invasion of Russia. The stories would include their sharing of how the war impacted them personally (as well as their families), and their adaptation to Canadian society. Their stories can be submitted in Ukrainian, and we will be able to translate them into English. It will be a bilingual book with both Ukrainian and English versions of each story.

Those students who are interested to share their stories are asked to write a consent email to VMarko@gscs.ca. After receiving the email, I will reach out to them, providing them with the detailed information so they could start working on their story.

Students who choose to submit their story do not have to provide their personal names, or the names of their family members, officials, people in authority, individuals who assisted them, or of towns/villages/cities/regions/etc. They may use pseudonyms if they wish to remain anonymous.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send me an email.

Thank you!

Peace & Blessings,
