Observe 'Weather Day' July 25 at Camp Hancock State Historic Site
BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to “Weather Day” Thursday, July 25, 1-3 p.m. at Camp Hancock State Historic Site in Bismarck. This free event is open to all ages. Day cares and summer camps are encouraged to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cookies and lemonade will be served.
Camp Hancock was home to the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1894 until 1940, compiling weather data collected throughout the state. This event celebrates the significant role of Camp Hancock in managing North Dakota’s weather, water, and climate data in the early years of the state.
The following “Weather Day” activities are sponsored by the National Weather Service and the State Historical Society of North Dakota: Make a tornado in a bottle, learn how clouds produce rain, build a kite, create instant snow, and paint rainbow lightning.
Camp Hancock State Historic Site, 101 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck, is managed by the State Historical Society. Summer hours are Friday-Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The site grounds with outdoor interpretive signs are open year-round. For more information, contact Johnathan Campbell, shsfgm@nd.gov or 701.328.9528.
