Crafting Activity Planned at Welk Homestead State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to blacksmith demonstrations and craft days this July at the Welk Homestead State Historic Site, near Strasburg. All activities are free, and children must be accompanied by an adult. 

July 6 Blacksmith Demonstration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bob McCay, an amateur blacksmith from Bismarck, will share his knowledge of the craft and use of the coal forge. 

July 6 Nesting Doll Painting, 1-3 p.m. Learn how to paint your own matryoshka (nesting doll). The activity is open to school-aged children and adults. 

July 20 Barnyard Brushstrokes, 1-3 p.m. Spend the afternoon painting your own wooden farm animals.  

The Welk Homestead State Historic Site illustrates the history of agriculture in the early 20th century, German Russian culture and architecture, and the career of bandleader Lawrence Welk, who grew up on the farm. 

The Welk Homestead, located at 845 88th St. SE, Strasburg, is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
