July Member Meeting: Disability, Language, Access

The Northwest Editors Guild’s July member meeting—to be held online on Monday July 8, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time—will be a presentation and Q&A about disability, language, access, and community. It will be hosted by a small group of editors who came together during the past few years of monthly Zoom meetings among disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent editors.

Please join us! You can register for free here, and please share the link with any editing friends or colleagues. If you’d like to join the panel or pose questions for the group, please contact the host, Kyra Freestar, at kyra@bridgecreekediting.com.

In addition, our next monthly Zoom meeting centering editors with disability will be July 18 at 10 a.m. Pacific. RSVP here.

Tips & Tricks: Patriotic Word Games and Other Fun

60 Patriotic 4th of July Trivia Questions to Test Your Red, White and Blue IQ from Reader’s Digest. When was the first 4th of July celebration held at the White House? And on which day was the Declaration of Independence actually signed? Find out here!

'Gaslighting,' 'Woke,' 'Democracy,' and Other Top Lookups from Merriam-Webster Online. Did you know that “democracy comes from the Greek words dēmo (“people”) and kratia (“strength or power”)?” (Related, and also from Merriam-Webster: What is a Liberal?)

Have a little fun with a 4th of July word search (keep an eye out for these 4th of July vocabulary words from Dictionary.com!), or hear NPR staff recite the Declaration of Independence, a Morning Edition tradition of more than 30 years’ duration.

The Smithsonian also has a great spotlight on the 4th of July, including some fabulous vintage ads and other ephemera.

Lastly, while it’s not especially a fun thing to do, now is a great time confirm your voter registration status and make sure it’s up to date.

However you celebrate, please be responsible with your fireworks, and we wish you a very happy July!
