YOUR PASSPORT TO SUMMER READING

We are thrilled to share that our Summer Reading Kickoff: Read, Renew, Repeat event was a success!  With nearly 100 participants, the day was filled with reading excitement and family fun. The engaging storytime sessions inspired our youngest readers, the creative craft stations encouraged artistic exploration and self-expression, and the interactive games and activities at partner agency tables kept everyone entertained and engaged. Thank you to everyone who participated and made the start of our summer reading journey so memorable.

Celebrate the end of summer with a family fun day filled with prizes and resources! ! Mark your calendars for our Summer Send-Off: Reading and Resource Fair on Saturday, August 10 from 1PM to 3PM. Join us for an afternoon of fun, learning, and community spirit as we wrap up our summer reading adventures.

BRUSHWOOD CENTER FAMILY OUTING

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods works collaboratively with community partners to engage people with the outdoors through the arts, environmental education, and community action.


On Friday, July 12 from 4-6PM, join the Highwood Library and Brushwood Center for an outdoor activity for all ages. Brushwood Center will drive families to Ft. Sheridan for a family-friendly Nature Walk! Transportation is provided; please arrive at 3:45PM as the bus will leave promptly at 4:00PM! Registration is required. Parents/guardians must accompany children.

HLCC BOOK CLUB: July Pick

This month, we are reading The Searcher by Tana French. The story follows a retired detective who moves to a small Irish village to escape his past. However, when a local boy asks for help finding his missing brother, the detective discovers that even idyllic towns can hide dark secrets. Come join us for a discussion of this New York Times Bestseller and NPR Best Book of the Year!


Ways to check out the book:

  • Physical copies are available at the library.

  • Audiobooks and e-books are available on Boundless for three-week check-outs.


The discussion will take place in English. Refreshments will be provided.

HOMEWORK HELP VOLUNTEERS

Are you passionate about supporting young learners? The Highwood Library & Community Center is seeking dedicated volunteers to provide free Homework Help for elementary, middle, and high school students across all subjects during the upcoming 2024-25 academic year.


Our Homework Helpers play a vital role beyond tutoring—they empower students to advocate for themselves while offering guidance and encouragement.


To get involved, please complete a volunteer application. New volunteers will participate in a brief orientation and complete a background check application.


Make a difference in our community today! Your commitment can have a lasting impact on the educational journey of our youth.

RAVINIA FESTIVAL’S WORDS & MUSIC PROGRAM

The Highwood Library has partnered with Ravinia Festival’s Words & Music program to offer free lawn passes to Highwood Library cardholders on select Ravinia evening performances.

Limited tickets are available for the 7:30 pm Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) performances on July 12, July 13, July 20, July 21, 25, 26, August 1, August 2, 6, 10, 15, 18, 20, 27 and September 10, 2024. Tickets are available only valid on date printed, may only be used on the evening of the performance, may not be exchanged for a dated ticket, and cannot be sold. To request a ticket, please call the library at 847-432-5404.


Ravinia Patrons Ride Free! In partnership with Metra, all trains on the Union Pacific North Line will honor Ravinia tickets as train fares; patrons can show their dated concert e-ticket for a free train ride to and from the park on concert days.
