‘Gingras Days’ events planned in Walhalla
WALHALLA, N.D. – The public is invited to celebrate “Gingras Days” July 5 and 6 at state historic sites near Walhalla. The event is free, and lemonade will be served. All ages are welcome.
On Friday, July 5, the trading post and colorful home of Antoine Blanc Gingras at the Gingras Trading Post State Historic Site will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for guided tours. Located 1.5 miles northeast of Walhalla, these are two of the oldest standing buildings in North Dakota. At 1 p.m., historian Chris Floyd will provide insight on the Battle of Grand Coteau fought between the Métis and Dakota in 1851. Floyd recounts the battle as an employee of the American Fur Company. Historic games reflecting this region will be available to play.
On Saturday, July 6, the recently reconstructed Kittson cabin at Walhalla State Historic Site will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about fur trader Norman Kittson and his trading post built circa 1852. Walhalla State Historic Site is located on Martyr Drive in Walhalla.
Gingras Trading Post State Historic Site and the Walhalla State Historic Site are managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The grounds of both are open year-round. For more information, contact Jeff Blanchard, 701.825.6840. Find additional programs at history.nd.gov/events.
