Newsletter - June 2024

Welcome to our June newsletter

This month our newsletter includes:

Chief Executive's Update

Isn’t it lovely to finally see the sunshine - as always, the month of June is a busy one for us here at Healthwatch East Sussex as we are in the process of putting the final touches to our 2023-24 Annual Report, finalising plans for our 2024 Annual Event and continuing work on a range of projects listening to and sharing your experiences of local health and care.
The first week of June is also Volunteers Week, an opportunity to say a huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, who are essential to all that we do. On the 3rd June we held a thank you event to celebrate the hard work of our volunteers. The event included a guest speaker who shared with us, the history of the banoffee pie, which was created right here in East Sussex.

To find out more about volunteers week you can visit our website here, or if you are interested in volunteering with Healthwatch and want to find out more click here.

NHS Sussex welcomes 14 new Youth Consultants

In late May, NHS Sussex welcomed 14 new Youth Consultants.
Youth Consultants are volunteers aged 16-24 available to help shape health and care services.

The group came together to learn more about the health and care system, the Youth Consultant role and how they can support tackling health inequalities and improving services.

Stephen Lightfoot, Chair of NHS Sussex, briefed the group on the work being done through the Improving Lives Together Strategy, and explained why it’s so important that they hear the views of children and young people as part of their commitment to working with people and communities.

Learning Disability Week, 17th-23rd June:
Supporting people with a learning disability to access healthcare
This year’s Learning Disability Week (17th to 23rd May), run by MENCAP, focuses on the theme ‘Do you See Me?’, which highlights the importance for people with learning disabilities in being heard, seen and valued.

People with a learning disability can suffer poorer health outcomes than the general population, due to inequalities in access to healthcare services.
If you have a learning disability, you can ask to join your GP’s learning disability register to help you get the health care you need. This will make it easier to ask for support such as extra time at appointments, help to understand what your doctor says, and ensure you get your invite to an annual check-up.

The East Sussex Learning Disability and Autism Health Facilitation Team offer support to people aged 14 and above to access health services and stay healthy. An information leaflet with further information is available here.

The team can be contacted by:
Email: sxicb.ldahfteastsussex@nhs.net
Phone: 07717 421948

Keeping safe in the hot weather

As the weather heats up over the summer months, it is important to stay safe in the heat and look after ourselves and others.

Tips for staying safe during hot weather:
  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and avoid too much alcohol.
  • Look out for people who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated.
  • Do not rely on sunscreen alone to protect you from the sun, wear suitable clothing and spend time in the shade.
More information
The NHS website has lots of guidance and tips for coping in the hot weather and information on those most at risk during hot weather on their website here

East Sussex County Council have also shared tips on how to keep cool in a heatwave on their website here.

Healthwatch East Sussex - Volunteering update

Volunteers Week 2024

The first week of June was Volunteers Week, an annual opportunity to celebrate the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK.

Throughout this week we have taken the opportunity say a huge thank you to our volunteers!

Why Volunteer with Healthwatch East Sussex?
Our volunteers give people a voice in health and social care by raising the profile of issues that matter to patients and service users.

At Healthwatch East Sussex, we make volunteering work for you. Whether you can only spare a few hours or are looking for regular involvement, we’ll make sure to match your availability and interests to make volunteering a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Our host East Sussex Community Voice CiC is an accredited Investing in Volunteers organisation, and will support you throughout your volunteering, helping you develop skills, gain experience, and make a difference.

What can I get involved in?
We have a variety of activities open to both Healthwatch and Young Healthwatch volunteers to suit your interest and experience, including:
  • Reviewing services as one of our ‘Mystery Shoppers.’
  • Becoming a Liaison Representative and attending conferences, meetings, and groups on behalf of Healthwatch.
  • Attending engagement activities and capturing the public's views and experiences.
  • Conducting Enter & View visits to local health and social care services, gathering feedback from the people that use it, (role subject to requirements).
  • Attending meetings with professionals and decision makers to share findings, views, and ideas.
  • Taking part in annual Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE), visiting local hospitals to provide a patient’s point of view.
  • Providing feedback on surveys, questionnaires, and communication materials.
Our young Healthwatch volunteer program is open to anyone between the ages of 12 and 21, living or studying in East Sussex.
