| He saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
What did Jesus teach? More importantly, how did Jesus teach? The gospels give us parables and sayings, healings and miracles, all of which are wrapped up in narrative form. Because it all is a story, it is easy to read the gospels without exploring their inner meaning. But inner meaning is what spiritual life is all about. Inner strength allows us to keep faith and practice love no matter how the outside world is behaving or what kind of mood we’re in.
For most of our organized existence, the Church has been primarily a belief system with saints, but it has not been always been that way. In our early days, every Christian was a saint, and we had a deep contemplative thread, hinted at in the gospels and clearly expressed in three so-called “gnostic” texts, The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Philip, and the Gospel of Mary. By means of sayings and dialogues, these three gospels take us on an interior journey, guiding us past the shrillness and into a whole new order of reality. Or as the Gospel of Thomas says:
Whoever searches must continue to search until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed; and being disturbed, they will marvel and will reign over All.
Mary Magdalene was the most mystical of Jesus’ disciples. By transcending the barrier of gender, she embodied Jesus’ ministry of reconciliation.
We will honor her at our Sunday Eucharist. And you can join us every Thursday morning at 8 am starting August 1 to begin your day astounded at the power of your heart. |

| | | Beth Lewis, flautist, will be our soloist on Sunday. Accompanied by Doug Richardson, she will play the beautiful round tune “Seek Ye First.” It is a musical rendition of Matthew 6:33, part of the Sermon on the Mount. Here’s the whole passage in all its King James glory:
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. |

F.I.S.H. Fundraiser! As many of you know, F.I.S.H. (Friends in Service Here-Santa Rosa) is a charitable organization that operates a food pantry—currently located on Sebastopol Road in the Roseland area of Santa Rosa. Current congregation members that volunteer include, Eleanor Albon, Kerin McTaggart, Leslie Clark & Margaret Merchat. Additionally, donations in food form are received from various markets and farms/gardens in the area. Overall, it is a very efficient and effective operation—but they need your help! You can help in a variety of ways:

Alternatively, if you are willing to make a cash donation which will be used to purchase gift certificates to be included in the auction – again please contact Margaret. Time/Direct Donation: If you have any interest in volunteering – contact any of the current volunteers – “jobs” range from picking up food, sorting, bagging, administrative duties, etc.--- lots of various tasks.
