Starting in mid-July, there will be a timber sale on the south side of OO inside the loops, lasting approximately 8-10 weeks. This selective thinning operation aims to remove around 25% of the trees to improve the quality of the even-aged oak stand. The forest management strategy includes single tree selection based on specific removal guidelines: prioritizing high-risk of mortality, releasing crop trees, addressing low crown vigor, poor stem form and quality, less desirable species, and improving spacing.
Moreover, a "Big Tree" guideline ensures the retention of long-lived, large diameter trees to enhance aesthetics in high-use recreation areas. During this period, bikers and hikers heading south towards the Gravel Pit trailhead are advised to take the Wildside trail detour, and it is recommended to avoid the area if possible to ensure safe and efficient work flow.
