This month’s Newsletter focuses on helping your customer with maintaining their Wolmanized® Outdoor® Wood deck.

Deck Maintenance Allows for Years of Outdoor Living
Womanized® Outdoor® Wood protected with Wolman® E copper azole (CA-C) is a popular building material choice for DIYers and contractors decking due to its resistance to decay, insects, and fungi. However, like any decking material, it requires regular maintenance to ensure its longevity and aesthetic appeal. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to maintain your Womanized® Outdoor® Wood, including brightening, staining, and painting.

Regular Cleaning
Regular cleaning is essential to keep Womanized® Outdoor® Wood decking in top condition. Dirt, debris, and organic matter can accumulate on the surface, leading to mildew and mold growth.

1. Sweep regularly: Use a broom to sweep away leaves, dirt, and other debris from your deck.
2. Wash the deck: At least once a year, wash your deck with a mild detergent and water. Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the surface gently.
3. Pressure washing: For deeper cleaning, a pressure washer can be used, but keep the pressure low (below 1,500 psi) to avoid damaging the wood fibers.

Brightening the Deck
Over time, decks might lose their original luster and appear weathered or grey. Brightening the deck can restore its natural color.

1. Deck brighteners: Use a commercial deck brightener that contains oxalic acid or citric acid. These products help remove tannin stains and mildew, bringing back the wood's natural color.
2. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Typically, you will need to apply the brightener with a brush or sprayer, let it sit for a specified time, and then rinse it off with water.
.

Staining the Deck
Staining Womanized® Outdoor® Wood decks can enhance appearance and provide additional protection against the elements.

1. Choose the right stain: Select a high-quality, water-repellent and UV-resistant stain specifically designed for treated wood. Semi-transparent stains are often preferred as they provide color while allowing the natural beauty of the wood grain to show through.
2. Preparation: Before staining, ensure the deck is clean and dry. Sand any rough spots or splintered areas.
3. Application: Apply the stain using a brush, roller, or sprayer. Work in small sections, following the wood grain, and avoid pooling. Typically, one to two coats are sufficient.
4. Drying time: Allow the stain to dry completely between coats and before using the deck. This can take 24-48 hours, depending on the product and weather conditions.

Painting the Deck
Painting offers a different aesthetic option but requires more maintenance over time compared to staining.

1. Select the right paint: Use a high-quality exterior latex paint designed for treated wood. Paint with UV inhibitors will help prevent fading.
2. Preparation: Ensure the deck is thoroughly cleaned and dry. Sand the surface to create a smooth, even texture.
3. Priming: Apply a primer designed for use on treated wood. This step is crucial as it helps the paint adhere better and last longer.
4. Painting: Use a brush or roller to apply the paint, working in thin, even layers. Typically, two coats of paint are recommended.
5. Maintenance: Painted decks require regular touch-ups to maintain their appearance. Check for peeling or chipping paint annually and reapply as necessary.
Additional Tips
Inspect regularly: Recommend regular inspections of decking looking for signs of damage or wear, such as loose boards, protruding nails, or rot. Address any issues promptly to prevent further deterioration.
  • Sealing: Even though Womanized® Outdoor® Wood is resistant to decay, applying a sealant can provide additional protection against moisture and UV rays. Consider re-sealing the deck every 1-2 years.
  • Avoid trapping moisture: Ensure proper ventilation around and under the deck to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold and rot.
By following these maintenance steps, you can keep your Womanized® Outdoor® Wood deck looking beautiful and performing well for many years. Regular care not only enhances the deck's appearance but also extends its lifespan, providing a valuable return on your investment.
