We are a nonprofit organization that fills a void in support of young adults (18+) who are grieving the loss of a close loved one. Our mission is to help young people cope with their loss and begin healing through the power of the outdoors. We supply everything for a supported outdoor experience and provide a caring community of those who understand and are sharing the same experience of loss.

Think Fall and Perfect Hiking Weather!

Announcing Our Fall Program for Grieving Young Adults, Oct. 4–7

The Umbrella Project's fall hike is just around the corner, offering a unique opportunity for young adults aged 18+ grieving a loss to connect with nature and find comfort in a supportive community. With the cooler days and crisp evenings, our fall backpacking trip is always an unforgettable, as well as healing, experience.

We have limited spots available for the fall trip, October 4–7, 2024. Fill out an interest form on our website today if you are interested in joining us. Please share this newsletter or our online posts (Facebook, Instagram) with someone you know that would benefit from this opportunity! Lots more info on our website.

Awesome Spring Trip!

Five grieving young adults, two men and three women, ranging in age from 22 to 31, tackled 21 miles on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland over the course of three days with our amazing trip leaders. There was much rejoicing and relief at our celebratory lunch at Gathland State Park on June 3, as it was the first backpacking trip most of our hikers had ever taken. The transformation from the beginning of a trip to the celebration at the end is truly humbling and inspiring to see.

We were pleased to have participants from four different states and the District of Columbia. Our volunteers did a terrific job in helping them feel comfortable, navigate the hike, and bond as a group. This is what the Umbrella Project is all about – helping these young people cope with their loss and begin healing through the power of the outdoors.

Umbrella Project Participant Spotlight: Leah Spungen

Leah lost her partner, Eric, in a tragic accident in 2023. Always an adventurer, Leah had kept her eyes open for new opportunities to explore and had found herself on her greatest adventure when she met Eric. Though he was from Maryland, Eric moved to Alaska, and introduced Leah to the vast, wonderful, wilderness of Denali. They spent their time together playing outside: skiing, snowmachining, hiking, and finding the best coffee around.

Leah found out about The Umbrella Project from her parents, who had stopped by the UP booth at Frederick’s In The Streets festival. She was a participant in the inaugural Winter Program in February, 2024, and found such comfort in it that she decided to create her own grief group for community members in their 20’s and 30’s (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1110611139968830/). She’s looking forward to going on the fall hike in early October and has been an inspiration for all Umbrella Project participants and volunteers.
