President’s Message

Can you believe that August is here already?  Our Canadian golfing season seems to get shorter every year.  What can a GTA member do? Sign up for as many of our remaining golf activities as possible, of course!  Please read on below to ensure you can participate in the upcoming events.  If you have never done so, try testing your skills in our competitive division of the GTA Chapter Championship.  It’s a great way to tune up your game and enhance your strategic management of the rules of golf.  Who knows, next year you might even compete on the international level as did our own Bev H. who competed in the recent 2024 LPGA Amateurs Championship Open in New York…congratulations Bev on your 4th place finish!

The 2024 Border Cup competition with our LPGA Amateur sisters from the Detroit Chapter is set for September 7-8.  Check the details below as we continue to finalize the makeup of our winning team.

In addition to all the course activities, your GTA Chapter Board of Directors is working hard behind the scenes on important governance activities which we will update you on next month.

Enjoy swinging those clubs…see you on the course!

Paula Manuel
President

Our Membership

What a year we are having! We have now welcomed 110 new or returning members…there is no stopping the growth of the GTA Chapter! It’s wonderful to see many of these ladies have found there way to golf with our Leagues, on our weekend events, and have already referred friends or family to our Association.

On July 10, LPGA Amateurs Head Quarters released the results of the 2024 Member Get a Member Campaign, including the list of members who qualified for an award based on their recruitment of new members during the period of October 2023 – to June 2024. Congratulations to our GTA members who have won a gift of Callaway Golf Balls or more as a thank you from the US office. We will continue to track our membership for the season and report the results at the Season Closer.

Welcome to our latest members…

Leigha G Suzanne G Mary M Krista O Janet R

Many thanks to all our current members who continue to promote the Chapter and refer their friends to join us.

Participation in GTA Activities

We have been tracking GTA member participation in our League play, events and volunteer activities with many thanks to our volunteer Janette C. who is masterful with Excel spreadsheets.  Our top participants from April through June are Virginia L, Jae R, and Janice H….well done!  We also see there are members who have not yet participated, so please come out and golf to avoid a “0”participation score next to your name.

Calendar of Events

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE REGISTRATION CLOSING DATE AND TIME FOR EACH EVENT! Golf courses require OUR FINAL NUMBERS roughly 7 to 10 days in advance of the event date. This means that we must decline any member requests to participate that are submitted after these dates – this is disappointing for both the requesting member AND for our Chapter when this results in a smaller field of players. Also, please note that special events like the Chapter Championship and Border Cup require additional planning in order to purchase prizes and gifts ahead of time.  Therefore, when you see an event you are interested in, PLEASE SIGN-UP ASAP. That way, we can obtain an early estimate of the level of interest in the event and avoid the extra time and administrative work required by our Golf Events and Communications Committees to send out multiple reminders. Please plan your calendars in advance to help us continue to offer you great golf experiences!

Thank you on behalf of the Golf Events and Communications committees!

Chapter Championship - Upper Unionville Golf Club, Markham

Come join us on Saturday August 10th for our premiere competitive individual stroke play event of the season! We currently have 13 registrants and would like to have a field of at least 24 competitive players with three flights based on Handicaps. Don’t miss out on testing your skills on this beautiful and challenging 18-hole course! Any active GTA Chapter member with a current handicap (minimum of five 2024 posted scores, with cut-off date August 3rd) is eligible to participate. If you simply want to golf for fun, sign up for the recreational group.  Registration is through the Event Portal and closes on August 2nd, 11:00 pm.

Caledon Woods Ladies Day Invitational #2, ClubLink, Bolton

Come join host Bev H. for a second chance to join her club’s Ladies Day group at Caledon Woods GC, on Monday, August 12th.  A maximum field of 20 players will begin play with a 2:30 pm shotgun (arrive by 2:00 pm). We currently have 12 spots open. If those are not filled by August 7th, we will open those spots to ladies who played in the June Invitational #1. Unfortunately, our earlier event at Dragon’s Fire had to be cancelled due to the weather, but good news…we have rescheduled the event for Saturday, August 17th.  There are only 9 remaining spots so please come and join organizer Astrid to experience one of the GTA Chapter’s favourite courses.  Cost of the event for a member is $104 walking, $129 shared power cart and for guests $114 walking and $139 shared power cart. Register through the Event Portal (closes Monday, August 12th at 11:00 pm).

The Border Cup

We are excited to announce that details for the 2024 Border Cup have been finalized! Any active GTA member who currently maintains a handicap with a minimum of three 2024 posted scores is eligible.  We are looking for 10 more GTA members to join the team for this fun international event on September 7-8 at the Tarandowah Golf Club near London, Ontario. The $250 cost includes 2 rounds of golf with cart, plus dinner Saturday night and lunch on Sunday. Please check the Golf Genius portal for details about accommodations for this event. Registration closes on Thursday August 15th, 11:00 pm.

League Play

League play is keeping busy despite the weather and it’s wonderful to see so many members taking advantage of the variety of courses.   It’s a short Season – don’t miss these offerings and be sure to thank the coordinators and volunteers who are making it happen.

Match Play

The League has finished its first round of play. Congratulations to Alison M., Jae R., Shelley S., Trish B., Astrid B. and Mary C. who were the winners of their pods and are moving on to the semi-final round. Results can be found under Match Play League on the website.  Good luck everyone!

2024 LPGA Amateurs Championship Open

On July 19-20, qualifying LPGA amateur members competed in 36 holes of individual stroke play on the Bethpage Red State Park Golf Course in Farmingdale, NY.  Two Canadians were in the field – Bev H. from the GTA Chapter and Donna B.P. from York Simcoe.  Congratulations to Bev who finished 4th low net out of 25 golfers in the second flight…well done Bev!

New member recruiting continues all year. Understanding the Mission and Vision of LPGA Amateurs can help give potential and new members a sense of purpose and inspire them to say yes when asked to join or to help. The Mission describes the WHAT and HOW of the LPGA Amateurs: “Connecting women of all abilities to learn, play, and enjoy golf.” The Vision is the WHY LPGA Amateurs exists: “To enrich the lives of women through the game of golf.”
