Ahoy!

Last week, the Marine Technology Society and the Society for Underwater Technology announced Martin “Marty” Klein as the recipient of the 2024 Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration. This prestigious award “recognizes an individual who has made outstanding, sustained, and international contributions to the development, application, or propagation of marine and underwater technology.”

I met Marty in 1999 as an undergraduate ocean engineering student at MIT, at the MIT Deepwater Archaeology Research Group meetings. We had many mutual interests, from ocean technology to archaeology and rowing. More importantly, for the 25 years I’ve known him, Marty has always been one of the kindest, most encouraging, and most supportive people I’ve known in the field. He was one of my first choices for the ODL board of directors and has been instrumental in shaping our vision.

That spirit of unwavering support and mentorship is at the heart of everything we do here at ODL. Mentoring and positively encouraging anyone to join the field of ocean exploration is essential to growing the global community of ocean explorers. For too long, many of these fields have discouraged new ideas, new backgrounds, and new approaches. As our Accessing the Deep training program moves into the mentorship phase this fall, we’re excited to see the ideas that can emerge from the program when we pair our participants with ocean leaders who are as supportive as Marty Klein has been to me in my career.

We have always envisioned the Ocean Discovery “League” as a team of ocean superheroes from every background and lived experience, united by a shared passion for the ocean. Thank you for following and joining us on this journey!
