Headmaster's Message

Tena Koutau Katoa

Successful Careers Evening follow-up!
One of the key Marist pillars is ‘Love of work’. This springs from St Marcellin’s belief that young men should be encouraged to discover their God Given talents and use them in the service of others. It is this which gives them joy and satisfaction!

Last Tuesday we had a very well organised and successful Careers Evening. A large and diverse range of providers and businesses gave boys excellent information and insights. I encourage parents of our senior students to follow up the careers evening by:
  • Discussing next steps for them beyond Sacred Heart College
  • Review their NCEA goals in light of their career aspirations
  • Carefully select their subject options if returning to school next year
  • Make an appointment to see Mrs Harvey our Head of Careers, if they are uncertain or want more information
Sacred Heart College Service Programme
Sacred Heart College is not a high-performing state school with a Catholic/Marist veneer. One way to test our authentic Catholic Character is to measure the response to the Gospel imperative ‘Love God and thy neighbour’. Over the last week, we have stressed to the boys that Christ is our greatest role model who provided the example when he said “I have come not to be served but to serve". Your sons are the hands and feet of Christ in this world. We are encouraging them to be Marist Men of Service. Most do a fantastic job.

Service includes:
  • Signing up to the Sacred Heart College Service Programme
  • Supporting the efforts of Sacred Heart College Young Vinnies
  • Volunteering to become a blood donor
  • Offering to coach, tutor or mentor younger boys
Maintaining Academic focus
As we finish Week 3 of Term 3 – your sons should continue to prioritise academic achievement, including NCEA and scholarship. This should be part of regular conversations at home.

Catholic Caring Foundation Awards

Sacred Heart College students, David Sosene, Tommy Petrov, Sunia Vaivelata, Max Butler, Liam Hawkey, Ming Yuan Francis Deng and Seth Byers were recipients this week of the Catholic Caring Foundation Awards for their service and commitment to working for those in need. The awards were presented at a Diocesan Mass celebrated by Bishop Steve Lowe with nominees from other Catholic secondary and primary schools and supporting Catholic organisations. We thank these leaders for their service.

Academic

AUT Shadow Leaders Day

Harry Caughey, Jack Williamson, and Seth Byers attended the AUT Shadow Leaders Day. This event allows students to spend a full day shadowing professionals in fields such as Accounting, Economics, Business, and Law. The students experienced life beyond school, gaining valuable insights and sparking questions about their future career paths. It was a highly beneficial experience, providing them with practical exposure and a clearer understanding of their potential professional interests.

Maths Week

Week 4 is Maths Week! On Tuesday afternoon the Annual Interhouse Mathex Competition will be held in the Auditorium. This includes 96 of our top problem solvers from Years 7-10 who will be busy solving problems and sprinting to their judge in a race to earn house points. Also, students should look out for daily opportunities to win prizes by answering maths questions. Questions will be in the daily notices with answers due by lunchtime each day to the boxes at the back of K13.

Australian Mathematics Competition

On Wednesday, 120 problem solvers from Years 7-10 sat the Australian Maths competition. First run in 1978, the Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest-running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. The AMC contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend students’ problem-solving skills. The results are released in November and certificates are awarded in December.

Maths Clinic

Maths Clinic continues this term in K13 every Wednesday lunchtime. All students are welcome to come and use the space to do their maths homework or to get some extra help from a Maths teacher.

Pasifika Maths Clinic

The Pasifika Mathematics Clinic continues this term in K10, every Monday after school from 3:15pm until 4:30pm. Students from Maths courses at all year levels can attend. Mr Afungia will be available to assist students with any course-related material, including homework, catching up on missed classes, and assessment preparation. Students should bring relevant work (workbook, calculator, task sheet, etc.) and have organised suitable questions so that available time can be utilised efficiently.

Beekeeping Club

The Sacred Heart Beekeeping Club is looking to start our first hive in September. We already have a few club members but if you are interested in donating gear, offering expertise, or would like to be involved in this group please contact Mr Chris Greaney at cgreaney@sacredheart.school.nz.

Pastoral Care

Uniform

Our school uniform is expected to be worn correctly and with pride. Please ensure your son/s are wearing the correct items to school, and replace items as required. Of note are outstanding haircuts and non-compliant shoes which need to be addressed. Your support is most appreciated.

Vehicles to school

If your son is bringing a vehicle to school please ensure that he has completed the correct permission. With the current building construction both within our school grounds and neighbouring streets, parking is currently at a premium. Consideration is required at all times.

Road safety

In addition to vehicle safety, we must emphasise the importance of road safety to everyone. Students continue to be reminded to use the pedestrian crossings on West Tamaki and Crossfield Road. Your support in reinforcing this message at home would be most appreciated.

Trafficquiz.com is a website developed to spread awareness regarding traffic and road safety rules. Visit their website and take the Road Safety quizzes to learn about and be conscious of following road safety and traffic rules. This can save many lives.

William Pike Challenge

We currently have 20 students completing this inaugural programme at SHC. Over 120 hours of community service and 85 hours of passion project work has been completed to date! An outstanding achievement by our small group who have only been working on this for a term.

Loves-Me-Not

This week we welcomed the NZ Police to facilitate the Loves-Me-Not programme with our Year 12 students. Loves-Me-Not is designed to discuss relationship abuse and to start to take action for change. It is based on a student inquiry learning process, where students take action (personal action, effective bystander action and community action) to prevent harm from relationship abuse. Student feedback has indicated that this has been a most valuable and informative seminar. Our thanks go to NZ Police for their time educating our young people.

Devices

Our new system for device loans is working effectively. However, we have a small number of students who continue to borrow and need to complete the outstanding device loan documentation paperwork. Please ensure that your son charges his device each evening ready for the next school day.
