MESSAGE FROM THE REV. DAVID C. SEYLE
When I was in seminary in the early 70s, acceptance was the “norm” in the theology school. “I’m OK; You’re OK” was in and “Here I Stand...” was out. One could believe anything at all, and orthodoxy was frowned upon. All this was couched in a fuzzy notion of compassion. Surprisingly it was my anthropology professor, Dr. Gwen Neville, who pointed out the fallacy in that perspective: a window that is always open is better than one that is always shut.
My oh my, but times have changed! Nowadays acceptance is out, and antagonism is in. For me to be right you have to be wrong. Dialogue has been replaced by dogmatism. I wonder what Dr. Neville would say today.
Without her here to advise me, I consulted the profound theologian, “Snoopy.”
“I hear you’re writing a book of theology,” Charlie Brown says. “I hope you have a good title.”
“I have the perfect title, ‘Has It Ever Occurred to You That You Might Be Wrong?”

Christ Church Book Group
Thursday, August 22, 10:30 a.m.
The Christ Church Book Group was rescheduled following the cancellation of the meeting due to Hurricane Debby. Join us next Thursday in the undercroft as we explore insights from the thought-provoking work, Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler. Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School who specializes in the study of the prosperity gospel, a creed that sees fortune as a blessing from God and misfortune as a mark of God’s disapproval. At thirty-five, everything in her life seemed to point toward “blessing” when she was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. The book traces her journey from her need for certainty in her life, to learning that life is just as beautiful without it.

All are invited to take part in a special adult forum series from September 8–29 in the undercroft chapel, From There to Here: Flourishing in Times of Transition. Our Interim Rector, the Rev. Canon Cathy Zappa, will lead the first session, introducing herself and exploring this season of transition for Christ Church. What does it mean to be in an interim period? What might we expect during this time? Join us as we discuss the hope and promise of living into a season of transition. Swing by the undercroft kitchen to grab a cup of coffee, then gather in the chapel at 9:30 a.m. The nursery will open at 9:15 in the Parish House for those in need of childcare.

Listening Sessions for the Diocese of Georgia's Strategic Planning Process![](https://mcusercontent.com/5da6420af0ce411d2ce23d0bd/images/b2091a16-a374-a8a9-ba7f-8729b3e81b4f.jpg)
Your congregation and your Diocese need you to participate in the Strategic Planning process, which will provide a shared direction for the next five years. This process is primarily intended to help the people of the Diocese discern how the Holy Spirit is leading us into the future and then naming that shared vision in a clearly defined plan. In asking, "What does fidelity to Jesus look like in this moment?" we can confidently look to the Spirit to guide us into new ways of embodying our living hope.
The Savannah Convocation is invited to an in-person listening session on Sunday, September 8 from 2–4 p.m. at St. Thomas, Isle of Hope.
Online sessions will take place on August 27, 6–8 p.m. and September 10, 6–8 p.m.

Can You Sew a Straight Line?
If so, there's an opportunity for you to help with this year's Christmas Pageant! Christ Church has a wonderful cache of costumes, the hems and sleeves of which are altered each year to fit the child wearing them. The work is easy and fun, and the results are adorable. Whether you consider yourself a seamstress, tailor, milliner, or you just hemmed some curtains one time, your help would be an incredible addition to the wonder of Christmas. Please contact Katie Griffith if you are interested.
