Congrats To New York Squash Player Nicole Bunyan on Her Maiden Pan-Am Champs Win!

Canadian squash player and Squashletic founder Nicole Bunyan has lived and trained in New York for several years now and recently survived a thrilling encounter against Canadian compatriot Danielle Ray to win the FPS Pan American Senior Championship for the first time. She won 12-10 in the fifth, perhaps proving that her recent psychological training and efforts to "be tough to beat" are paying off. Congratulations, Nicole!

Congratulations to The Winners of the Inaugural Kids'N'Culture Tournament

Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural Kids N Culture tournament organized by Matt Poveromo at Open Squash FiDi on August 10-11:

4.5 Bracket
First place: Aahan Aggarwal (left, red shirt)
Second place: Alejandro Grego

4.0 Bracket
First place: Bo Lindstrom (left, with the Harrow rackets)
Second place: Adi Bodas

They raised $2,500 for Kids N Culture, which is completely volunteer run, and focuses on New York City high school students. It aims to close the opportunity gap because many New York students, despite being incredibly diverse, don't always get the opportunity to interact with other cultures firsthand. The nonprofit has hosted 29 trips with over 280 students, travelling 238,000 miles. They've gone to places like India, Europe, China, Thailand, Peru, Vietnam, Japan, Morocco, and the UK. Applications for 2025 just opened, with trips to Turkey and France if high school students want to apply. The deadline is October 4.

Fancy Footwork With Daniel Tai

Modern dancer and New York Squash player Daniel Tai featured in a recent Boast About It video discussing his career and fanaticism for squash. A member of the Printing House club in the West Village, Daniel found his way into teaching squash to young people—he taught at the Colony Club for 12 years, and he’s been at the River Club with Chris Walker for five years. He also designed the “local legends” placards on the Open Squash lockers. Check out the interview here.

NY Squash Legend: Damien Mudge, All-Time Greatest Doubles Player

Damien Mudge  (above left, with match partner Ben Gould), was the most accomplished doubles player in the history of the sport and the Squash Doubles Association’s (SDA) “all-time leading scorer” by a wide margin. His career was a paragon of longevity and not just record-breaking but record-shattering excellence. He was on the No. 1 ranked doubles team virtually uninterrupted from the outset of the 1999-2000 season, partnered with Gary Waite, all the way through the 19-year period that extended to the end of the 2017-18 season, during which he and Manek Mathur went undefeated as wel. Remarkably, he excelled on both walls, a distinct rarity in doubles squash. After seven years— and 75 tournament wins, the most all-time of any combination—playing the right wall with Waite, Mudge switched to the left wall and led the tour in wins first from 2007-10 with Viktor Berg and then from 2010-15 with Ben Gould before joining forces (and returning to the right wall) with Mathur for the 2016-17 season. Click Here to read the full profile

Transitions at StreetSquash as Simba Muhwati Hands Torch to Joanne Schickerling

With deep gratitude for his service and excitement for his future endeavors, StreetSquash is bidding farewell to Simba Muhwati, its Squash Director. Simba is leaving StreetSquash to become the founding Executive Director of SquashBridge, a sister program of StreetSquash.

During Simba’s tenure at SreetSquash, he achieved remarkable milestones, including coaching five teams to victory at the Squash & Education Alliance (SEA) Team National Championships, and making history coaching the Thurgood Marshall Academy/StreetSquash team, the first-ever all-Black team to compete at the U.S. High School Squash Nationals in 2023. Additionally, Simba launched The Squash Academy, a pay-for-play squash program open to the public, and successfully led the organization’s rebuilding efforts post-COVID.

Simba’s vision for StreetSquash’s future included hiring Joanne Schickerling, who steps into the role of Squash Director. Joanne has been a part of the StreetSquash coaching staff since September 2022, but had previous involvement with the organization during her time as a coach for the Columbia University squash team. Earlier this year, Joanne was named President of New York Squash, having previously served on our Diversity Committee.

That’s it for this month. If you’re doing something incredible in New York Squash and you’d like us to feature it here in the newsletter, get in touch. We’re all ears
