Literary Crawl Highlight

The Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl returns on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at venues throughout the California Avenue corridor in downtown Reno. 

Reno writer and artist Brandy Burgess, a Community Curator for this year’s event, will lead a session titled Writing Through the Lens of Disability. Join Burgess in conversation with LGBTQ+ civil rights advocate and storyteller Bri Schmidt and University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) faculty member Elisabeth Miller on the ways in which disability and accessibility shapes the written word for writers and readers alike. Apply for a Grant 

The application period is NOW OPEN for the FY2025 Nevada Humanities Major Project Grants! We are proud to offer grants up to $7,500 to address the continuing need for humanities-based programs statewide. Major Project Grants are available to Nevada 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, tribal entities, and government entities, including libraries, museums, and educational institutions, across the state to fund public and educational humanities projects. The application deadline is September 10, 2024

Spark! Youth Poetry Competition @ The Las Vegas Book Festival

Register by October 7 to enter the 2024 Spark! Youth Poetry CompetitionEach year, Nevada Humanities invites high school students, in grades 9-12, residing in Clark County, Nevada to present three original poems to be judged by a panel of poets, authors, educators, and other community members. The 2024 Spark! Youth Poetry Competition will take place at the Las Vegas Book Festival on October 19, 2024. The top three students are selected as first, second, and third-place winners. High school students in grades 9 to 12 residing in Clark County, Nevada are invited to register to enter the competition and visit our website to learn more.

Spark! Youth Poetry Competition
Nevada, P.S. I Love You Postcard Project Exhibition Reception and Hands-On Activity 

Nevada Humanities and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge present Nevada, P.S. I Love You Postcard Project: Love Notes from Across the Silver State. The exhibition is on display at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center Corn Creek Gallery. View an array of postcards made by people of all ages from across the state sharing their art and what they love about Nevada. Join us on September 15 for an exhibition reception and hands-on postcard activity. This event is free and open to the public. 

The Nevada, P.S. I Love You Postcard Project will also have a hands-on activity at the city of Las Vegas' Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz event on September 14 at Floyd Lamb Park. Visit our website for more information.

Drawing inspiration from folk traditions and retro-designs, this collection echoes our shared artistic inheritance and a shared experience of building something greater than the sum of its parts, offering something magical for every viewer to cherish and enjoy.

Cyanotype Workshop with Megan Berner
Nevada Humanities, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation, will host a workshop led by visual artist Megan Berner. Join us on September 7 at 11:00 am, to create original photograms by arranging objects on sensitized paper. Using natural and found objects to make their prints, participants will learn how to prepare their own cyanotype paper and have an opportunity to experiment with the process. All participants will receive a copy of Sagebrush to Sandstone: A Humanities Guide to Outdoor Nevada. This event is free to the public. Space is limited. Advance registration is required.

The Life and Legacy of author George R. Stewart  
2024 marks the 75th anniversary of George R. Stewart’s classic novel, Earth Abides (1949). On September 14, join local writer and authorized Stewart biographer Donald Scott, in Carson City, for a presentation and overview of Stewart and his legacy, with special emphasis on his Nevada work and Stewart’s two books that are currently being adapted for film: Earth Abides and U. S. 40: Cross Section of the United States of America. This program is supported with funding by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

George R. Stewart Saunter in Carson City

On September 28, take a saunter up the old Lincoln Highway in west Carson City, in honor of the 75th anniversary of George R. Stewart’s great classic Earth Abides. The hike will lead participants from the parking lot near Lower Kings Canyon Falls, into the eastern edge of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and back to the parking lot. This event is free to the public but it is limited in capacity with advance registration required. This program is supported with funding by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

September 5 @ 12 pm Loreloop: Session Zero with Ashley Warren

Learn about the development and conception of Loreloop, an original game and collection of interactive short stories, designed by writer Ashley Warren and Nevada Humanities as part of United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture, a joint initiative between the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. During this Session Zero—an introductory session that introduces the game to the players—game designer Ashley Warren and Program Manager Kathleen Kuo will walk you through the process of creating original characters and building an original world in Loreloop from the ground up.
