SEPTEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER
A Word from our Chief Executive Officer, Mark A. Smith
Moving into the fall season brings leaves falling and support and donations to the MVAA music instructional programming. A generous in-kind donation brings an upright bass guitar, an Ovation guitar, and a handmade Dulcimer into the instrument inventory. A generous contribution was added to the children’s instructional program. Community Bank has graciously added funds to the new “EARS” music lessons program.

The “Empower a Rising Star” initiative will enable deserving young students to begin or improve their musical journey with music lessons funded by corporate and nonprofit donations. Stay tuned as we watch these Mon Valley Rising Stars perform and grace the stages of our local high schools.

To support or sponsor the “EARS” Program, visit

Student(s) of the Month
Well, it's “back to school” again. This year brings forth another exciting project into the MVAA roster. The MVAA is enormously proud to announce the formation of “Take 5 Brass," a dynamic brass quintet set to bring a fresh and vibrant sound to the Mon Valley Region.

Comprised of Sam Vollstedt, Ethan Rumbaugh, Korben Andrews, Lucas Salaway, and Evan Lee, the brass quintet will debut on Sept 8 at Hiller Fire Hall. Under the direction of Mr. Ken Coffman, the skilled student musicians will be performing a series of concerts throughout the Mon Valley Area.

MVAA President Annette Buffer expressed her enthusiasm for the new ensemble, saying, “We are thrilled to introduce ‘Take 5 Brass” to our community.” For details and schedule, contact MVAA @ 724-565-1687.
MVAA Announces "EARS" Sponsorship Program

“Empower a Rising Star (EARS)” is a program that provides music lessons to deserving students in grades 4-11. We’re calling on individuals, organizations, and businesses to partner with us by sponsoring music lessons for young, aspiring musicians.

For just $250, you can sponsor 10 music lesson sessions for a student, helping to nurture their talent and open doors to opportunities they might not otherwise have. The program kicks off in the first week of October 2024, with sponsorships accepted on a rolling basis.

Once all sponsorships are secured, we will tally the funds and distribute scholarships to current and new students. Priority will be given to those who demonstrate financial need, ensuring that your generosity reaches those who need it most. Sponsors can also support more than one student, with each additional sponsorship costing $250 per student.

“We are incredibly excited to launch the ‘Empower a Rising Star’ initiative,” said Annette Buffer, President of MVAA. “This program embodies our mission to make music education accessible to all children, regardless of their financial circumstances. By sponsoring a student, you are not just funding lessons but investing in their future, dreams, and potential.”

To sponsor a “rising star” or for more information, fill out our Sponsorship Form, call 724-561-5616, or email info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org.

WCCF Annual Day of Giving: September 19, 2024
Throughout the year, Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) brings affordable, high-quality instruction on most musical instruments to people of all ages, fostering a vibrant musical community. Our work is made possible by donors who believe in our mission and find value in our programs.

One of our most important fundraising activities each year is WCCF Gives, a community-wide giving event hosted by the Washington County Community Foundation. You can see from the Check Contribution Form, which you can download here, that a wide variety of local charities benefit from this giving event, which runs this year from June 1 through September 19. Gifts by check are accepted throughout this giving window. If you would prefer to give by credit card, you may do so on September 19 through www.wccfgives.org.

With your support, we can continue to nurture the musical talents of our community, provide exceptional performance opportunities, and ensure that the arts remain accessible to all. Your contribution helps us sustain programs like the EQT/MVAA Free Summer Concert Series and our various performance groups, bringing joy and cultural enrichment to the Mon Valley region.
MVAA in Focus: August Snapshots

In August, MVAA had the opportunity to showcase an extraordinary individual who made significant strides in music, literature, and beyond. Linda, a gifted musician, recording artist, and author captivated audiences with her remarkable journey from the Brownsville Telegraph to her extensive collection of novels. Her career was a testament to her dedication and talent, making her an inspiring figure for all who encountered her work.

As a special bonus, Linda was interviewed by another celebrated Brownsville native and accomplished writer, Robin Acton. This unique opportunity to hear from Linda and Robin was a memorable event. Attendees enjoyed their insightful discussion and were inspired by Linda’s incredible story. It was a chance to engage with two influential figures in our community that was not to be missed.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ben Brown and Community Bank President and CEO John Montgomery for their generous donation of $2,500. Their continued support is instrumental in advancing our mission. Every dollar of this donation goes directly to the MVAA music and art programs in the Mon Valley, ensuring that students and families can enjoy the enriching benefits of a cultural arts experience.

Your contribution is crucial in sustaining and expanding our programs, allowing us to provide valuable artistic opportunities to our community. Thank you once again, gentlemen, for your commitment and support.

On August 3, MVAA's Regimental Fife & Drum Unit and TC Jr. Stage Band took the stage at Brownsville Community Day, held at the Cast Iron Amphitheater. Both performance groups delivered outstanding shows highlighting their talents and bringing vibrant energy to the event. The performances were well-received, adding a special touch to the community celebration.

MVAA CEO Mark Smith expressed his enthusiasm: "It was an honor to see our Regimental Fife & Drum Unit and TC Jr. Stage Band perform at such a wonderful community event. Their dedication and skill were truly on display, and it was a joy to contribute to the spirit of Brownsville Community Day."
MVAA's VoiceZ on Fire show choir delivered a captivating performance at the Hiller Hog Roast, held at the Hiller Fire Hall. Their energetic and dynamic show was a highlight of the event, bringing a touch of musical flair to the community gathering. Additionally, The Classics band took the stage, with their appearance sponsored by MVAA, adding a nostalgic and lively element to the festivities.

MVAA President Annette Buffer shared her excitement, stating, "It was a pleasure to see VoiceZ on Fire and The Classics contribute to the success of the Hiller Hog Roast. Our students and sponsored artists showcased their incredible talents, enriching the event and connecting with the community. We are proud to support such vibrant performances that bring people together and celebrate the joy of music."
