Update on the Illinois State Assembly
The LWVRB had a strong presence at the Illinois State Assembly this past Saturday. Many of our board members and other leaders attended in person, while others joined remotely. We gained valuable insights into the League's efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation, explored the League in Action app, and discussed initiatives like the League's postcard project and Smart Voter Data, which will guide our postcard outreach efforts.

I am incredibly proud to be part of our League. Our dedicated volunteer leaders consistently invest their time and energy to empower voters and safeguard democracy.
Barb Hochstadt, Co-President

The end-of-summer gathering is on Saturday, September 7. It’s a fun event with a parade, stage performances, carnival rides and games, food and craft vendors, and a beer tent.
Help us meet the public, share information about League events, voter services, and our non-partisan position. We’ll have a game and treats for kids, possibly election vocabulary bingo.
We will need two more volunteers for each shift from 8:30 for setup through 5:30 for cleanup, with each shift list lasting two hours and 15 minutes. So please register today to help: League of Women Voters of Roselle/Bloomingdale: Septemberfest 2024 (signupgenius.com)
Register Now: SCOTUS Punts on Social Media Censorship: What’s Next?
Tuesday, August 27, 7:00 pm
Does the First Amendment allow U.S. government officials to intervene and prevent the spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms? The U.S. Supreme Court recently had an opportunity to rule on this question. Instead, they declined to issue decisions in two cases, punting them back to officials in Texas and Florida.
Jill Wine-Banks, the distinguished attorney and MSNBC Legal Analyst, will join us to speak about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent action on social media censorship.
This program will not be recorded for later viewing—please join us to watch it live. Register to attend.

Empowering the Next Generation of Civic Leaders
LWVUS recently launched a national partnership with Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA) to help empower the next generation of civic leaders. Both LWV and Girl Scouts have a long history of empowering girls and women. From partnering with our local council to help Girl Scouts earn civics badges, to promoting voter engagement through their “Promote the Vote” national service project and VOTE411, there are many ways for our League to begin a relationship with our local Girl Scout council or troops. Leagues can learn more about this partnership and access collaboration guidance on the League Management Site.
Do you have experience working with the Girl Scouts? Would you be interested in investigating the possibilities for our League created by this new partnership? If so, please send an email to roberta.borrino@gmail.com.
