FROM THE DEACON'S BENCH
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide…
A priest friend once told me that when I have a hymn running constantly in my head, to pay attention. It is one way God often reaches out to us. Well, “Abide with Me” has been in my head for more than a week now and I’m dwelling on it. There is so much in the world that would distract us: the job, our daily chores, our to-do list, appointments… the list goes on. It may well be that that is why we come to church in the first place, to be reminded at least once a week of who we are and where our heart is supposed to be.
I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
And the temptations are great: to find our self-worth in position, power, control; to measure ourselves by what we have accomplished—or what we have failed to accomplish—
In this Sunday’s Gospel lesson, Jesus says, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.” There’s that word again. Abide means to stay with, to remain with, to stay true to. And we are told that this is the promise of God, that God will stay with us, will remain with us, will stay true to us, even when we lag behind and fall away again and again. Abide with me, we pray, and God will and does.

Christ Church Choristers
Choir Camp is underway, and you have two chances this week to hear these excellent young musicians. This evening at 5:45 p.m., the choristers will lead a service of Sung Evening Prayer. This short service is the perfect way to end your work day with prayers, readings, and anthems offered by the choristers. Then on Sunday, the choristers will provide musical leadership at the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist service, where we will also formally install and commission the singers as members of the choir. This brief liturgy highlights the importance of their ministry in the worship life of our congregation.

In the Spirit: Monday, August 26 at the Sandfly 5-Spot
Second and Fourth Mondays, 5:30 p.m.
"In the Spirit" is a discussion group for those who seek to deepen their faith through meaningful conversations. Join us this Monday at The 5-Spot in Sandfly (7360 Skidaway Rd), where you can grab a drink or a bite as we spend time together. We'll gather at 5:30 p.m. and begin our discussion at 6:00.
This week's topic: Who Do You Say that I Am?
"Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah."
–Mark 8:27–29

Listening Sessions for the Diocese of Georgia's Strategic Planning Process![](https://mcusercontent.com/5da6420af0ce411d2ce23d0bd/images/b2091a16-a374-a8a9-ba7f-8729b3e81b4f.jpg)
Your congregation and your Diocese need you to participate in the Strategic Planning process, which will provide a shared direction for the next five years. This process is primarily intended to help the people of the Diocese discern how the Holy Spirit is leading us into the future and then naming that shared vision in a clearly defined plan. In asking, "What does fidelity to Jesus look like in this moment?" we can confidently look to the Spirit to guide us into new ways of embodying our living hope.
The Savannah Convocation is invited to an in-person listening session on Sunday, September 8 from 2–4 p.m. at St. Thomas, Isle of Hope.
Online sessions will take place on August 27, 6–8 p.m. and September 10, 6–8 p.m.
