The Mountain Top, Portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Final Hours

Join us for an exciting OLLI Outing to experience "The Mountaintop," a captivating play that will be performed on Sunday, September 1st, at 2:00 PM. The performance will take place at The Coca-Cola Stage, located at the Alliance Theatre, 1280 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30309. This thought-provoking drama offers a powerful portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final hours, and we are thrilled to share this memorable experience with you.

The Fascinating Brill Building Era

In this upcoming course, explore the rich, cosmopolitan musical landscape that shaped some of the greatest works of a memorable era. During the 1950s and 60s, a group of talented young songwriters gathered in midtown Manhattan, crafting timeless pieces that now form the cornerstone of the Great American Songbook. Through engaging stories, personal anecdotes, and captivating audiovisual materials, we’ll dive into this golden age of music. We’ll highlight how this period blended diverse sounds and introduced a new level of social awareness to pop music, with iconic figures such as Neil Sedaka, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Phil Spector, Don Kirshner, Burt Bacharach, and many others leading the way.

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) Her Lost Masterpiece

Mary Cassatt was commissioned to paint an immense 60' by 15' mural that was displayed in the tympanum of the Woman's Building in Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition from May through October 1893. Once the exhibition closed, the painting disappeared. This session is a presentation of the piece, based on a few black and white photos, descriptions that give a sense of the mural's color scheme, and an 1893 color lithograph of a portion of the mural's central portion. The Widow Spy: Marti Peterson Shogi

Join us for an insightful and engaging presentation by Marti Shogi, a seasoned CIA officer with a remarkable 32-year career. In this thought-provoking talk, Marti will delve into her firsthand experiences in espionage, offering a unique perspective that goes beyond the novels and movies many are familiar with. Her career, which includes pivotal roles during the Vietnam War, Cold War, and the war on terrorism, provides a rare and compelling look into the world of intelligence.

Marti will recount her experiences, including her groundbreaking role as the first female CIA officer in Moscow, her work with a key Soviet agent, and her dramatic arrest by the KGB. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in detailed discussions following the talk.

For a deeper understanding of Marti's experiences, we recommend reading her book, The Widow Spy by Martha Peterson. We are arranging a pick-up time for books at the OLLI Office for those that purchase.

Teach for OLLI

OLLI at Emory engages the metro Atlanta community and those beyond. We offer in-person, online and hyflex class formats. Our instructors are mostly volunteers that help our organization engage older adults with continued learning options and opportunities. OLLI at Emory, provides hundreds of stimulating courses each year, designed especially for adults over 50 who are interested in continuing the pursuit of knowledge in a relaxed but challenging environment.
