Shoppers run a MUHC at Masters Championships

It’s been a busy time over the past few weeks with a number of Shoppers travelling to Sydney and Tasmania for fierce rounds of competition between the states, and many coming out on top!

VIC teams celebrated a wealth of success and MUHC members played a part in four of the teams that bagged Gold medals.

The participating players included:

Men:

Over 40s / Div 1 – Charles Swain

Over 45s / Div 2 – James McCaw

Over 65s / Div 1 – Anthony Date, Bas Groeneveld, RichardKermonde, Clive Harrison (Player/Coach) and Peter Urie (Player/Coach)

Over 65s / Div 2 – Andrew Gelbart, Simon Cooper and Tony Darby

Over 70s – Ross Gordon

Women:

Over 34s - Kat Dal Santo

In the Over 40s / Div 1, Charles Swain was part of the team that beat TAS 4-2 to secure Gold for VIC.

In the Over 45s / Div 2, VIC also won Gold, beating QLD 3-1 in normal time. James McCaw received the MVP award for his efforts.

In the Over 65s / Div 1 competition, there was great excitement as, having finished 0-0 against QLD in normal time, the Gold was decided by shootout, with the winning goal scored by MUHC’s own Peter Urie!

Finally, in the Over 65s / Div 2 contest, it also went down to the wire with another shootout against another QLD team. The game finished 1-1 in normal time, with VIC’s equaliser coming from shopper Simon Cooper. Simon then converted his shootout, with Tony Darby also scoring to see off QLD with a 4-3 shootout result.

Huge congratulations to everyone who participated and brought home medals!

In addition to that success, there will be more action for two of our members later this year as Charles Swain (Australia A 40+) and Richard Kermonde (Australia 65+) have been selected for the 2024 Masters World Cup, which will be held in Cape Town,South Africa, from October 12-21.

A few weeks earlier, MUHC also had representation at the Women’s Masters National Championships which took place in Sydney where, again, VIC teams were very competitive.

MUHC’s Kat Dal Santo lined out for the VIC team that finished fifth in the competition, beating QLD 2-1 in the classification game. The team was a diverse spread, with players from as far as Mildura and Wodonga taking to the field!
