Dear Friends,

I'm a firm believer that we create our future through good habits and repetition. Discipline is a learned technique. We are not born with it. My 2019 book "Cognitive Dominance: A Brain Surgeon's Quest to Out-Think Fear" explored this idea. The mission of Trenton Youth Wrestling and Learning Center is guided by this principle.  This month's Newsletter will share some ideas and links that may inspire you to take action to make changes that make a difference in your life or in the lives of others.

Let's get started.

I always appreciate the opportunity to talk about fear. As a Neurosurgeon, I am continuously amazed by the power of the human brain and our ability to adjust our perceptions to better serve our needs. Earlier this year I was interviewed on the topic of "Dismantling Fear to Perform At Your Best". One of the key ideas that I discussed was how wrestling serves as a "Fear Laboratory" for young wrestlers. It creates a context for young wrestlers to understand and confront how their own fear manifests. It's an important part of what wrestling and sports in general can accomplish for young athletes, and it doesn't get as much exposure as I think it deserves.

Women in Medicine Month

The American Medical Association has named September as Women In Medicine Month. To celebrate the month, I would like to share a story about women in medicine.

Today, women neurosurgeons remain a rare species; they represent only a small percentage of the total in the United States. But at the time Dorothy Klenke Nash, M.D. became one, they were even scarcer; there weren’t any at all! She was the very first neurosurgeon of her gender in the U.S.

New on YouTube

As many of you know, one of the best ways to see current medical content is by subscribing to my YouTube channel. This recent addition to the medical content is a part of the "Walk & Talk" video series developed in collaboration with Med Student Maggie Fitzpatrick, MS, and is suitable for both healthcare professionals and interested patients. Much of medicine is learned on the fly and in unplanned scenarios. "Walk and Talk" allows you to experience elements of that situational learning so familiar to med students.

Suspected post-op fever? What do you do. Start with the "5 W's" : wind, water, wound, walking, and wonder drugs. Diagnostics and Pearls. How a neurosurgeon approaches the question.

Good Habits From A Neurosurgeon

Years ago, as I was about to start my own practice as a neurosurgeon, I experienced a transformative moment.

It didn't happen in the OR during a challenging surgery. It happened in a quiet room at home, under the glow of a single lamp.

I started reading books.

It was life-changing. Before long, I realized that books were doing more for me than just instilling knowledge in my brain — they were also improving my communication skills. I became a more attentive listener in meetings with patients and business associates, and more articulate and insightful in my responses.

I certainly believe that young people should take up reading at the earliest opportunity, but I also hope that the gift of books will land in the hands of people like me: latecomers to serious reading who will be grateful to have discovered the wonders of literature.

I've written about this subject in Business Insider and on LinkedIn. I believe it's one of the most important topics I've ever written about.
