September Chapter Meeting
Theory of Grand Action Design and Regulation
Floyd Barlow
In this class Floyd Barlow will present the theory / design of the grand action and how center pin friction plays a critical role in performance. We are taught to do all repairs and bed the keyframe before regulation. The result of your regulation work varies from piano to piano until you apply what is taught in this class.

Floyd began his career as a piano technician 33 years ago in southern Utah. To improve his skills, he attended many PTG conventions; to name a few: Pacific Northwest in SLC, Westpac, and National conventions. Most importantly, attending the local chapter meetings have proved most invaluable.
In addition to our technical presentation, we will be starting up a Basic Skills Class to take place before the technical. This will be the first in a series of classes teaching basic skills in piano technology. This week we will be discussing and practicing string replacement with Zach Froelich, RPT. While jigs will be provided, tools will be limited. If possible, please bring your own. The following list will be needed for practice.
  • Tuning lever
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Round nose pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Parallel pliers
  • Coil maker & pin
  • Hitch pin loop maker
  • String hook
  • Coil lifter
  • String setting tool (brass or maple)
  • Music wire (recommended size 15-14)
All are welcome! See you there!
