Volume 11: Back to Basics

 Our Greatest Hits!

Hello, subscribers! Welcome back.

This week, we interrupt our two-part issue on graphic novels with some of our greatest hits!

At CASLS, we believe:

  • Meaningful communication is the purpose of language learning.
  • Reflective teaching and learning facilitate lifelong discovery and growth.
  • Language learning transforms the lives of learners and those around them.
  • Language is a catalyst for change and enriches the communities in which we live.
  • It is our responsibility to support access to language learning for all.
In service of these beliefs, we decided to compile some of our most watched YouTube videos that model language learning strategies. We know that as learners build awareness of the strategies that help them showcase their strengths, they are empowered to take control of their learning.

Also, be sure to check out our Links we Like this week. Each resource provides insight on the importance of critical skill development.

Our Top Five Language Learning Strategies

Click on the title to each video below. Share your favorites with other collaborators (colleagues, learners, etc.).

1. Vocabulary Strategy: Create a Word Map
2. Productive and Interpretive Game: Draw What You Hear
3. Listening Strategy: Predict What You Will Hear
4. Speaking Strategy: Stating Your Intentions and Asking for Clarity
5. Intercultural Communicative Strategy: Making Observations

Want more strategies? Check out this printable guide we created for self-directed learners!

Note: When trying the strategies with learners, make sure to explain their purposes in order to focus learners' attention. Then, model and practice the strategy multiple times with learners. Especially when learning new skills, a learners' first engagement with a potentially high-impact strategy may be superficial. Time on task will support that strategic engagement becomes profound.
