Pittsburgh Penguins' spicy new signing

You might say it was love at first bite. Or not. Regardless, when the Pens played an exhibition game in Halifax last fall, their VP had a donair. That lead to a conversation, which lead to a three-year deal for Antigonish’s Mr. Donair to sell spicy meat sticks at the PPG arena in Pittsburgh.

At Fox Harb'r, half a donut's better than none

In the case of deceased Tim Horton co-founder Ron Joyce’s heirs, it’s more like a Timbit. They tried twice to get the 2020 tax assessment on Fox Harb’r Resort cut from $21 million to a little over $5 million. An appeal tribunal this week okayed a joint recommendation of $17.5 million.

Sperri funding boost ensures U.S. expansion

Halifax’s would-be Boost-killer Sperri has just landed funding from biotech-focused Nàdarra Ventures, lead investor for the health drink’s U.S. expansion plans.

The company won the Canadian Health Food Association’s Launchpad pitch competition in 2021 and is now aiming to distribute, initially through Amazon, in the States.

Netflix, here we come

Good to see our century-old Chronicle Herald archive being put to good use. Two strong fellas packed it off this week to be added to new owner Postmedia’s growing trove of history. Postmedia Studios has just partnered with Contend to produce film, television and short-form content for online streaming networks. Who knows, maybe the next Curse of Oak Island lurks somewhere in all those boxes.

CAT ferry math

The Yarmouth-Bar Harbour run’s been busier this year, up by more than 20 per cent. That’s still not pre-COVID levels, though, and government subsidies divided by number of passengers now tallies about $400 a head.

Regulator ramps up fines on N.S. Power

Nova Scotia Power says it’s serious about improving reliability but the UARB ruled this week that it’s not serious enough. The regulator increased its penalty for outages and such to $1.25 million, more than twice the previous high.

Sydney's tech Stornado

Sydney’s data storage manufacturer 45Drives has been doing this for a few years now—inviting tech innovators for a summit and making connections to grow their business. It’s parent, Protocase, built a new facility for 45Drives in the middle of the pandemic, adding 50 jobs. Gotta love these guys, if only for the product names. Storinator, Stornado and Destroyinator, which wipes 60 drives at a time in case you were wondering.

PERSPECTIVES:

CHARLEBOIS: Is John Deere Dear John'ing EDI?

Molson Coors used to get awards for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The beer company, and John Deere appear to be moving on.  Sylvain Charlebois looks at why.

MILLENIAL WEALTH: It's up, and for some good reasons

Millennial wealth has more than doubled since the pandemic, in part because parents with money are passing it on before they pass on, but also because they did the smart thing and bought houses when interest rates were low.

That’s The Wrap.

Back next week. Unless Friday the Thirteenth and the black cat named Gus my wife is picking up today do me in.
