Nevada Center for the Book at the National Book Festival

Our visit to this year’s Library of Congress National Book Festival on August 24 was our busiest yet! Thousands of visitors stopped by our table to visit with our team, meet author Kim Foster, and grab a recipe card, stickers, and Nevada-themed swag. Each year, Nevada Humanities and its Nevada Center for the Book program select two books written by Nevada authors to represent our state at the National Book Festival. This year’s adult literature selection is The Meth Lunches: Food and Longing in an American City by Kim Foster; and this year’s youth title is The Moon’s Tear: A Desert Night’s Dream by Sophie Sheppard. Both titles are part of the Library of Congress Center for the Book’s national Great Reads from Great Places initiative, a list which includes books for youth and adults from each affiliate center from the 50 states and six U.S. territories. Author Kim Foster also wrote about her experience with our team at the National Book Festival in her blog

Las Vegas Writes, Volume 15 Book Launch and Conversation with the Authors

We are pleased to announce the 15th volume in the Las Vegas Writes series: Desert Superbloom: Las Vegas Writers on Scarcity and Abundance, produced by Nevada Humanities and edited by Jarret Keene. Volume 15 includes a collection of original essays, stories, and graphic narratives that portray Las Vegas—“a city founded on flaunting so much, while cherishing so little.” With unique perspectives on blossoming in the luxurious yet resource-starved Sin City, this 15th volume of the annual Las Vegas Writes series features 15 local writers and artists, portraying a place where money is king, water is scant, and affordable housing is even harder to find than love. Nevada Humanities will host a book launch and conversation with the authors on October 17, 2024 at the Clark County Library Theater in Las Vegas. Please visit our website for more information.

Renowned artist and naturalist, Sharon K. Schafer, will present a series of black and white images that are messages from the edge, warnings of our growing estrangement from the world, and the desperate need to recognize and accept our place in nature. These photographs are a reminder that humanity’s deepest fear is not that we are separate from nature, but rather, that we are a part of it. This exhibition is supported, in part by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the state of Nevada.

George R. Stewart Saunter in Carson City

This saunter up the old Lincoln Highway in west Carson City, on September 28, is in honor of the 75th anniversary of George R. Stewart’s great classic Earth Abides - its 75 years of continuing publication (in 20 or more languages), and its author. The hike will lead participants from the parking lot near Lower Kings Canyon Falls, into the eastern edge of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and back to the parking lot. Please visit our website for additional details, including parking and trail terrain information. This event is free to the public but it is limited in capacity and advance registration is required. We are watching the Davis Fire situation and will provide program updates if needed. This program is supported with funding by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
