Dear colleagues,

Warm greetings to everyone as we settle into a new school year; I trust that you had a restful and enjoyable summer break.

We kick things off this term with our first Outdoor Education Day; we are delighted that the first school to visit is Ash Manor, which has just joined the partnership this year. Welcome to them and to Yateley School, which is also new to the Student Alliance. We plan to run 14 Outdoor Education Days between September and May, so please email lallen@wellingtoncollege.org.uk if you’d like to sign up for one. This term we are also running two large Skills Days, one for Year 8 and one for Year 10, as well as our Taking Maths Further Day for Year 10s. Booking will be available for all these events shortly. See the box below for some feedback from those who came to one of these events last year. For Year 13 students there will also be three Oxbridge online events, a law applicants event online and our very popular medical applicants day here at Wellington.

Year 8 Skills Day feedback

“This is the sort of content that we unfortunately don't have time to teach in schools, particularly the revision and memory techniques, and I think that this is a crucial skill for students of all ages.” – teacher

“The group of students I brought had been identified as a bit lost, lacking organisational skills or lacking in self-belief. I think they took a lot away from this day that will help them going forward. Ideally, we would love to offer this to a much larger group, as they could all benefit from it.” – teacher

"I absolutely adored my day and am so grateful that I had the opportunity to come here today!" – student

“I learned so many great things about growth mindset & being the best me!” – student

Our newest cohort of Wheeler students, having survived the residential course last June, (see pictures below) will join us for their first Study Day on October 2, with a varied programme of activities being planned, and we will welcome our Year 11 and 12 Wheeler students back to college this half term too. Applications will open very soon for Year 9 students to apply for the programme, which this year again will welcome 24 participants. If you are thinking of nominating a Year 9 student to apply for the programme, you are very welcome to attend a short online meeting on September 18 when we will answer any questions you may have.

Next month we will host a Subject Specific Support Group for Computer Science teachers as well as the year's first meeting of our Professional Learning Group, where members of the Teaching Alliance can share and generate collaborative opportunities and ideas.

See the What's Coming section below for dates. You can also find them on our website at wcla.wellingtoncollege.org.uk, which is full of information about our programmes, dates of forthcoming events and stories about past events, including lots of pictures of students - maybe even some of yours? - having a great time.

Wishing you, your staff and pupils all the best for the term and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Best wishes,
Paul
