Dear Friends,

This week, the Bridge Fire broke out in Angeles National Forest, spreading rapidly through the communities of Wrightwood and Mt. Baldy and burning more than 51,000 acres in the midst of high temperatures and strong winds. My heart is heavy for the residents in these tight-knit mountain communities who lost their homes. We declared a local emergency in Los Angeles County to draw down every resource available to extinguish the flames and get residents the support they need. The Governor also declared a State of Emergency for the fire, which became the largest wildfire in the state this week among many others that first responders were tackling across California. Thankfully, much of the fire's forward progress has been stopped as temperatures cooled later in the week. I'm grateful to the dedicated firefighters who have been working around the clock to put out the fire and to the Sheriff's deputies who helped residents evacuate safely.

For residents displaced and affected by the Bridge Fire, there will be a community meeting tomorrow, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in person at the Serrano High School Performing Arts Center and also livestreamed on Facebook. Emergency managers are standing up resources and those in need of support and services can click here. This fire offers a sobering reminder for residents in every part of the County to be prepared. I encourage you to read the Fire Department's Ready! Set! Go! Guide here to help you put together an action plan and emergency kit. We can never be too prepared.

Best wishes,

Kathryn Barger

The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is a beloved fixture in our Fifth District communities. Each year, the Huntington Ball garners support to bolster their efforts to foster learning, inspire creativity, and provide transformative experiences through their world-renowned collections and grounds. This year's event was no exception!
Plan a visit.
Each year, the Los Angeles Business Journal names the Valley 200, spotlighting community leaders who are bolstering businesses, investing in partnerships, and forging the path forward. I was honored to be in such great company at their celebration on Thursday!

The Sierra Madre Playhouse has been a beloved fixture in its community for 100 years. Now, their team has breathed new life into the historic building, hosting 140 events a year ranging from live jazz to silent films to innovative plays. Today, they invited me for a visit to share their exciting plans to expand their impact in the years to come. I'm proud they are one of our Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture grantees and look forward to seeing their next chapter unfold.
See a show.
It was a privilege to have U.S. Marine Corps veteran Corporal Anthony Velletto, a Pasadena resident and Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter mechanic, lead us in our Pledge of Allegiance at this week's Board of Supervisors meeting! I'm grateful for his lifelong commitment to service, both in our military and here in Los Angeles County.

This week, I sent a letter to the Executive Officer of the Los Angeles Superior Court asking for the upcoming Oct. 1 hearing for Sexually Violent Predator Christopher Hubbart to be moved from the Hollywood Courthouse to the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse. I want this important hearing to be as accessible as possible to community members from Juniper Hills and the Antelope Valley at large. They are the residents who may have to live with the consequences of this hearing, so they deserve to have immediate access to what is shared.

Each summer, The Hollywood Bowl provides thousands of free tickets to nonprofit organizations across the County. Above, you'll see supporters from Altadena nonprofit Melodia Mariposa enjoying a performance of Beethoven's music together. One attendee said, "Wow! That night was epic. The Bernstein piece was deeply moving. The countertenor sounded like an angel calling down from heaven. And then... the Ninth Symphony. Utterly sublime. Dudamel took his orchestra through the full spectrum of human emotions, and by the end of the 4th movement, I was trembling and in tears. Thank you so much for a musical experience I will remember til my last day." I'm proud of these incredible partnerships that make high-quality performances accessible to our residents in every part of the Fifth District.
