Ecodesign and energy labelling offer significant potential for energy savings in the Nordic region

Efficient energy use is a key factor in the success of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from the Nordic countries' energy systems. But how significant can the reduction become?

The new Nordic Energy Research report Energy Savings from Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Policies in the Nordic Countries offers insights into this. With updated calculations on energy savings from a wide range of household and industrial products within the EU ecodesign and energy labelling regulations, it shows continued large energy savings in the Nordic countries.

According to the report, the Nordic countries are projected to save about 160 terawatt-hours (TWh) of primary energy annually by 2030. This amount is almost equivalent to Norway's total electricity production in an average year.

Welcome to the Nordic Hydrogen Valleys Conference

Join us at the next Nordic Hydrogen Valleys Conference, on 22–23 January 2025 in Luleå, Sweden!

Nordic Energy Research welcomes researchers, innovators, investors, and policymakers to discuss elements related to hydrogen valleys – from Nordic decision making and collaboration, to utilising regional strengths in industry and geography. At the conference, you will have the opportunity to delve into issues such as hydrogen safety, priorities, upscaling, and feasibility. Part of the Nordic Hydrogen Valleys as Energy Hubs Programme, the conference will also look into the five projects funded within the programme. What solutions have they discovered so far that service the entire hydrogen value chain?

The conference programme is being finalised and will be announced soon. Until then, you can read more about the last Nordic Hydrogen Valleys Conference here and follow the Nordic Hydrogen Valleys as Energy Hubs Programme on Linkedin for the latest updates.

Meet the semi-finalists
in the Nordic Energy Challenge 2024

The Nordic Energy Challenge 2024 is approaching its final stage. The ideas submitted this year show a great range of solutions from a variety of actors, thereby catering to the diversity of society that this year's theme, Citizen Engagement, highlights.

In total, seven project proposals made it through the first round. The jury shall now select three finalists from the seven:

On 2–3 October the winner of the Nordic Energy Challenge will be announced at an award ceremony during the Annual Mobility Workshop in Oslo, Norway

Following the Iron Ore Line
towards a green energy transition

Last week, Nordic Energy Research went on a study trip to Northern Norway, Lapland, and North Bothnia to get firsthand insights into opportunities and challenges for a green energy transition in the Arctic region.

Starting in Narvik, we learned about the city’s energy plans and policy, about green ammonia developments at Kvandal, and about the Arctic University of Norway’s work on renewable energy solutions. The trip then continued to the epicentre of sustainable iron and steel industry – Kiruna and Luleå – where LKAB and SSAB gave us a crash course in mining raw materials to produce sponge iron and fossil-free steel. This technology will contribute to reducing global CO2 emissions by as much as Sweden’s entire current emissions, thereby setting a new world standard for sustainable mining.

We would like to thank everyone involved for contributing to four days of enriching experiences and look forward to seeing the progress of all interesting and important green energy activities in the north.

Aiming for zero-emission shipping in the Nordics

"The Nordic region can become a test bed for new technologies and lead the way for other regions," says Eirill Bachmann Mehammer, Task Leader and Senior Consultant, DNV, about Nordic Roadmap – Future Fuels for Shipping, a project aiming for zero-emission shipping in the Nordics.

The project puts focus on three zero-emission fuels – hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol – and sees a lot of promising initiatives across the Nordic countries in terms of green shipping corridors.
