IPR News & Events
October 2024
Dear IPR community,

Last week, IPR Associate Director Kammi Schmeer and I traveled to the Association of Population Centers meeting, held this year at the Minnesota Population Center. The APC brings together representatives of population centers from across the country to discuss our shared mission to support and promote population research. We heard updates about APC and PAA's advocacy on behalf of population data and population science, as well as initiatives such as the APC working paper series (contact me for questions about submitting your works in progress) and the APC fellows program (APC fellows Sarah Komisarow and Abba Greenleaf will be presenting at the IPR seminar series this spring).

Back here in Ohio, IPR is continuing to develop our connections with the Center for Family and Demographic Research at Bowling Green State University. The annual BGSU-OSU Graduate conference will be held November 1 this year at BGSU. Submissions are due today - all graduate students conducting population-related research are encouraged to submit work at all stages of development. Faculty and graduate students not presenting are welcome to attend. Submission instructions and information about RSVP are on IPR's website. I hope to see you there!

Warmly,
Sarah Hayford, IPR Director

Webinar: Lives Across Place and Time: Strategies for Impactful Comparative Life Course Research
This Friday, October 4, from 10 am-12 pm, scholars at Case Western Reserve University will present a webinar on comparative life course research. Comparative life course research provides both a conceptual framework and effective tools for understanding the role of the social environment in shaping human development and aging, and its outcomes including health, work, finances, and social networks.  With the support of the National Institute on Aging, this webinar provides the opportunity to hear from leaders in the field about how to design effective comparative research using a life course perspective and to advance our understanding of growing up and growing older within and across societies. Register online for the zoom link and further details about the presentation.
PAA Applied Demography Conference
The PAA Applied Demography Conference is an opportunity to showcase developments in applied demography, receive feedback on work in progress, and strengthen professional and personal ties within the applied demography community. The conference will be held in Tucson, Arizona, February 4 - 6, 2025.

Qualitative Research Data Management at APHA
The Qualitative Data Repository is presenting a credit-bearing Learning Institute at this year’s annual meeting of the American Public Health Association, October 27-30 in Minneapolis, MN.  The workshop is on the topic of “Qualitative Research Data Management for Public Health Researchers and Professionals: Maximizing FAIR Data and Compliance with the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy.” QDR staff will provide an introduction to research data management, with a particular focus on the benefits and potential secondary use of well-managed qualitative and multi-method data. In addition to learning how to approach data management choices with an eye toward appropriate eventual FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data sharing, during the hands-on portion of the institute, attendees will also be able to draft their own data management plans compliant with NIH policy.
PAA Advocacy Day
PAA's Advocacy Day will be held on April 10 in Washington, DC. Participants will meet with their congressional delegation to share examples of population research activities and advances and express support for the Federal government agencies that fund the population sciences, including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Census Bureau, and other statistical agencies.
PAA Members who are registered to vote in the U.S. are eligible to participate. If you are interested, fill out the advocacy day interest form online, and you will be contacted in December with further details. Training and materials will be provided.
