Lunch with Leaders in Education: Part II

“Challenges In the Trenches of K-12 Public Education”

Dr. Sandra Husk, Superintendent of
Salem-Keizer Public Schools
 
 Salem City Club is proud to present Dr. Sandra Husk, Superintendent of Salem-Keizer Public Schools as the second speaker in our series featuring Leaders in Education on Friday, February 17, at noon.
Dr. Husk will report what has developed in Salem-Keizer this academic year following the release of 231 licensed teachers and 139 classified staff at the end of last year, due to budget cuts.  She will address current initiatives of innovation and reform within the district.  She will share what themes have surfaced as major concerns and hopes from the many public  meetings held throughout the district since September.
     
The financial/budget situation is grim.  The deep lay-offs last year were necessitated by the loss of $54 million of state funding for academic year 2011-2012.  Added to cuts the two previous years, the net loss to Salem-Keizer is approximately $100 million.  Current state budget projections predict the loss of an additional $20 million from the budget for next year.  Dr. Husk will help the community address the key question:  Can high quality educational programs be maintained in the wake of such deep and continuing reductions in funding?
    
  Dr. Husk came to Salem-Keizer as a seasoned public school administrator.  She had previously served as a teacher, a counselor, the principal of an elementary school, the principal of an alternative middle school, executive director of learning services for a large district, and as Superintendent of Mapleton Public Schools in Colorado.  Sandra Husk earned her doctorate in Administration, Curriculum & Supervision at the University of Colorado, Denver. Previously she had earned a masters degree in Guidance and Counseling, and a bachelors in Elementary Education.

 2012 STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS
 
Salem Mayor Anna M. Peterson will be presenting the 2012 State of the City Address on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, Noon, in the Willamette Ballroom at the Salem Conference Center. This will be the Mayor’s second State of the City Address, intended to inform the community of the past year’s accomplishments and plans for the coming year. City Councilors will be joining the Mayor for this event, and are looking forward to this opportunity for dialogue with the community. Economic Development activity and forecast will highlight the speech, and the City’s 2012-13 budget will be outlined.
 
No RSVP is necessary. Lunch buffet is optional, the cost is $13 at the door and the buffet opens at 11:30 a.m.
 
The State of the City Address is sponsored by the Salem Rotary, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Salem City Club. The event has been taking place annually since 1983.

Fifth Fridays
“Authors You Should Know and
 Books You Should Read”
 
 Salem City Club is pleased to announce its Fifth Friday series.  This series of three, fifth Fridays will be focused on local authors. 

  


THE FIRST FIFTH FRIDAY was a great success!   Approximately forty people enjoyed an excellent presentation by Russ Beaton on his latest  book with co-author Chris Maser, Economics and Ecology-United for a Sustainable World.  Thank you, Russ.  And special thanks to members Jan Margosian and Carla Mikkelson for organizing this successful Fifth Friday.

At the next Fifth Friday, March 30, 2012, we will hear Gwen Carr discuss her newly released book, Perseverance:  A History of African Americans in Oregon’s Marion and Polk Counties. 

The final Fifth Friday, Friday, June 29, 2012, will feature Oregon’s first and only woman governor, Barbara Roberts, discussing her newest book, Up the Capitol Steps.
