Good evening,

As some of you might have seen, Student Support, a for-profit external organisation based in Toronto, recently sent an email alleging that Udemy & Calm is no longer being offered to students.

I want to emphasize that these services are no longer being offered by Student Support. The SSMU is committed to providing students affordable services to support their academic progress, and we haven’t given up on working to provide Calm, Udemy and Grammarly to you. 

Due to continuing legal and privacy concerns about Student Support, the SSMU’s Board of Directors voted not to renew a contract with them and instead to advocate for students to gain access to these services through direct contracts between the SSMU and the individual service providers. 

At present, no contract exists between Student Support and the SSMU which would give Student Support access to student emails. Their communication was not authorized by the SSMU and I, personally, would encourage you to unsubscribe.

Further, the SSMU is already in the process of negotiating contracts directly with Udemy, Calm, and Grammarly. Grammarly has not been available through Student Support since 2022, as they instituted a policy against Third-Party suppliers that year. Moving forward, the Student Support Fee will be used to gain access to these services directly.

The opt-out period for student fees begins September 13th and ends September 27th. We will have significant updates on what platforms are available with the existing fee before the end of the opt out period.

Comme vous l'avez peut-être déjà vu, « Student Support », une entreprise à but lucratif basée à Toronto, a récemment envoyé un courriel  à notre communauté étudiante en alléguant que les services d’Udemy et « Calm » ne sont dorénavant plus offerts. 

Je tiens à souligner que ces services ne seront plus proposés par « Student Support » en tant que fournisseur. L'AÉUM a pour mission de fournir des services à sa communauté étudiante afin de soutenir le parcours académique de chacun de ses membres. Par ailleurs, nous n’avons pas relâché notre objectif de vous donner accès aux services de Calm, Udemy et Grammarly. 

En raison des préoccupations juridiques et de la protection de la vie privée concernant « Student Support », le conseil des directeurs de l'AÉUM a décidé de ne pas renouveler son contrat avec cette entreprise. Au lieu de cela, l'AÉUM plaide en faveur d'un accès égal pour notre communauté étudiante aux mêmes services, grâce à de nouveaux contrats directs entre l'AÉUM et les mêmes fournisseurs de services individuels.

À l'heure actuelle, il n'existe aucun contrat entre  « Student Support » et l'AÉUM qui permettrait à  « Student Support » d'accéder aux courriels des membres de notre communauté étudiante. Leur communication n'a pas été autorisée par  l'AÉUM et je vous encourage personnellement à vous désabonner.

De plus, l'AÉUM est actuellement en train de négocier des contrats directement avec Udemy, Calm et Grammarly. Grammarly n'a pas été disponible par le biais de « Student Support » depuis 2022, car Grammarly a institué une politique contre les fournisseurs tiers cette année-là. Dans l'avenir, les frais associés au « Student Support Fee » permettront d'accéder directement aux mêmes services.

Veuillez noter que la période de retrait des frais d'inscription pour les étudiants commence le 13 septembre et se termine le 27 septembre. Nous publierons également des informations importantes concernant les plateformes retenues.

The SSMU acknowledges that McGill University is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee nations. The SSMU recognizes and respects these nations as the true and constant custodians of the lands and waters on which we meet today. Further, the SSMU commits to and respects the traditional laws and customs of these territories.

L’AÉUM reconnaît que l’Université McGill est située sur le territoire traditionnel non cédé des nations Haudenosaunee et Anishinaabe. L’AÉUM reconnaît et respecte ces nations en tant que gardiennes traditionnelles de la terre et de l’eau sur lesquelles elle est située aujourd’hui. En outre, l’AÉUM s’engage à respecter les lois et les coutumes traditionnelles de ces territoires.
