Volume 11: Back to Basics

Use Graphic Novels to Read, Write, and Speak!

Hello, subscribers!

Welcome back to our two-part issue on graphic novels.

In this issue, we explore additional strategies for using graphic novels to support all modes of communication!

Also, we are going to be experimenting with InterCom over the next few months because we recognize that media consumption patterns are changing. In each issue after this during our experimentation, we will give you the chance to respond and let us know if you liked the changes or not!

Finally, CASLS would like to extend a sincere thanks to Dakota Whisler, our Graduate Assistant, for his work on this issue.

Reading to Improve Speaking and Writing

See how graphic novels can support all modes of communication!

Activity: Collaborative Graphic Novel Creation

Learning Outcome(s):

Learners will be able to:

  • Collaboratively create a narrative with  a beginning, middle, and end

  • Express ideas through both writing and visual representation in a timed setting

Mode(s): Interpersonal, Presentational

Materials: Blank comic strip templates, pencils, erasers, colored pencils/markers, timer

Procedure:

  1. Group Formation: Divide learners into small groups ( 3-4 members per group).

  2. Introduction: Explain that each group will be creating a collaborative graphic novel. If needed, share a couple examples. See Links we Like for more ideas.

  3. Planning:

    • Give groups three minutes to brainstorm and plan the story’s beginning. They should think of key words and phrases related to the targeted content of the unit that they want to incorporate in this phase.

    • After planning, allow seven minutes for them to write and sketch this portion of the story on the graphic novel template. At this point, stick figures and other line drawings are fine.

  4. Repeat Process:

    • Move on to the middle section of the story. Again, give groups three minutes to plan and seven minutes to write and sketch.

    • Finally, complete the process for the end of the story with the same time allotments.

  5. Refining:Once the graphic novels are complete, have each group refine their graphic novels. The steps for refinement are below:

  • Elaborate drawings and art
  • Edit the langauge using a check list for look-fors
  • Write a final draft
  1. Reflection:

    • Groups will swap graphic novels and provide one another with feedback. They should use the look-fors checklist to support those efforts.

Notes:

  • Encourage students to focus on clear communication and collaboration during the planning phases. You may need to model how to engage in that type of collaboration with them.

  • Emphasize that this activity is about creativity and teamwork, so the final product doesn’t need to be perfect.
