Welcome, Fall! Dark nights and rainy afternoons have us ready to spend more time inside, and we’ve got a wide variety of fantastic events for you to choose from this month. Whether you’re a fan of history, gardening, crafting, snacking, science, or reading, we’ve got you covered!

🗺 The History of Immigration and Settlement in Southwest Wisconsin

Southwest Wisconsin has a rich history of great diversity in cultures, languages, and religions. Join Tracey Lee Roberts, UW-Platteville Senior Lecturer Emeritus, for a fascinating look at the history of migration in Southwest Wisconsin including the regional movement of Indigenous peoples, the lead and zinc mining rushes, the area communities of free and enslaved people of color, the migration of Amish families, and the more recent immigration of Spanish-speaking groups.

Whether you and your child are currently reading 1000 books, finished reading 1000 books, or want to find out how to sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, you’re invited to celebrate your early readers with us.

Why sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten? With every book that you and your child read together, you’re launching your child’s learning – and learning begins long before kindergarten. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is an easy way to give your child a great jump start. Plus, when you’ve reached 500 and 1000 books, you’ll get a special prize!

🍎 Apple Tasting

Enjoy the bounty of fall at an apple tasting. Meet the owner of Blue Roof Orchard and try several varieties of organic apples featuring diverse flavors and textures that you won’t find in the supermarket. For ages 6 through adult. Registration required.

🛍 Small Business Passports

Small business owners: don't miss out on this year's Small Business Passport. It's an easy way to give new customers a reason to visit your business. All you need to do is sign up and stamp participant’s passports when they visit your business between November 25 - December 23.

📄 Paper shredding

Just in time for Citywide Fall Clean-up, we’re partnering with Southwest Opportunities Center to host our fall shredding drop-off. Total limit of 2 grocery bags or 1 bankers box of papers per person. Shredding bins will be available October 7-18 or until the bins are filled, whichever comes first.


Southwest Opportunities Center (SOC), Lancaster WI, provides programming, employment, and services for adults with disabilities who live in Grant County and Southwest Wisconsin. SOC also provides production, assembly, and cleaning services to businesses in the area.


🌵 Fall plant swap

Did your flower garden produce extra bulbs or seeds that are looking for a new home? Do you have an accumulation of empty pots waiting to be given away? Drop off plants, seeds, bulbs, hand trowels, and any other plant gadgets that you no longer want at your house, and add some variety to your garden with new-to-you plants.

🧟 It’s alive!

Our perennially popular Frankentoys program is back. Bring out your inner evil scientist and reassemble some old toys into new monsters.

🍼 Community Baby Shower

We’re partnering with the Platteville Elks Lodge to host a Community Baby Shower. Join us at the library for free diapers, children's books, snacks, and more. All are welcome.

 💻 Tech Talks

Join Library staff for Oh No! It’s a Virus! Don’t be scared by spooky viruses this season! Find out how to deal with troublesome popup windows, learn about antivirus software programs, and discover the best way to avoid infections. Bring your own device for an opportunity to try out new skills and ask questions.

✂ Let’s get crafty

Unwind: We’ll make the tea, you bring the conversation and a project to work on.


Make it Midweek Book Creatures: Upcycle an old book into a witch, fairy, vampire, or other creature of your choice.

🌽 Science Fest

Join the Library and The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums for an agriculture-themed program in honor of the Wisconsin Science Fest. For ages 6-12.

💥 Teen anime

The votes are in! We’ll be watching Astra Lost in Space for our next season of anime for our monthly fun, food, and fandom. Ages 12-17.

🧸 Fall storytime

Storytime returns on Wednesday mornings. Bring a stuffie friend and join us for songs, stories, and friends at the Library. For young children and their grown-up.

🎬 Movie Club

This month’s selection is Nope, 2022 science fiction film directed by Jordan Peele that manages to be perfect for spooky season without being too scary. Check out a copy of from the Library, watch it at home, and join the discussion.

🌳 Smokey Bear Challenge

Only you can help Smokey celebrate his 80th birthday by learning how to prevent wildfires and help the environment. Read books and complete activities to earn badges. Sign up on our Beanstack App or stop by the library to pick up a log. For ages 4 - 11.

🍬 Sweet Treats on Main

Stop by the library for a delicious treat and some spooky fun during Platteville’s annual Sweet Treats on Main.


We know that all of the noise, activity, walking, and candy that’s part of Sweet Treats can be fun yet overwhelming for kids and parents alike, so we’ll also be hosting a Calming Room for your family to reset.
