MESSAGE FROM THE REV. MAX MAXWELL
This coming Sunday, September 29, is the feast of St. Michael and All Angels, which has long been a favorite of mine. When I became an Episcopalian while in seminary (THAT’S a long story) I joined the parish of St. Michael’s on the upper west side of Manhattan. The church has a magnificent set of Tiffany stained glass windows over the altar depicting St. Michael’s triumph over the dragon; I spent a lot of time staring at those windows. The parish eventually sponsored me for ordination, and when that finally occurred the congregation gave me an icon of St. Michael that had been written for me by an Episcopal nun. The icon rests on a table beside my bed.
In The Revelation to John (12:7-12) we hear about a war in heaven that broke out between Michael and his angels, and the dragon and his angels. Michael, of course, wins, and the dragon—who is called the Devil and Satan—is thrown out of heaven. The reason I mention this is to remind us that if a war between good and evil can break out so close to the throne of God, we should not be surprised that such a battle can break out here on earth, sometimes even within our own hearts. In the Aeneid, Virgil wrote a poignant verse (Book 1, verse 462) that the poet Seamus Heaney translated as “there are tears at the heart of things.” And as an Anglican monk once said to me, “the cross reveals the beating heart of God."
In other words, good and evil seem to be mixed together; no one knows why. But part of the promise of the cross is that Christ is with us in the tears and suffering. And good will triumph. I don’t know about you but, in the meantime, I count on St. Michael’s help.

Offered by the Parish Choir, this introspective liturgy is sung almost entirely by the choir, allowing the congregation to relax, reflect, and recharge surrounded by beautiful music in this sacred space. Upcoming Sunday Morning Adult Forum Series
A Different Community: Christians in the Public Square
Beginning Sunday, October 6, 9:30 a.m. in the Parish House
As Christians, we are called to be a community transformed into the image of Christ. This transformation is powerful enough to reach every sphere of our lives—not only when we show up at church on Sunday morning, but also when we scroll through our social media feeds, sit around the Thanksgiving table, and park next to that car whose bumper stickers betray an ideology very different from our own. Many narratives of our current cultural and political climate tell a story of “division,” but the truth is that there’s much more we have in common. Join the Revs. Cathy Zappa and Samantha McKean as we explore together how our identity in Christ shows us a different way to be in the world, empowering us to live into the unity, reconciliation, and love that God offers us in Christ.

Fall Evening Program in October
Ordinary Saints: How Christ Shines through the Lives of Everyday People
Sundays, October 6, 13, 20, and 27, Undercroft, 6:00 p.m.
![](https://mcusercontent.com/5da6420af0ce411d2ce23d0bd/images/2f376bc8-64d4-1244-4eba-e9f70900e71d.png)
Mother Teresa, Francis of Assisi, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King—these are the kinds of people who come to mind when you hear the word "saint." But what about those us who don't build orphanages, tame wolves, defend France, or lead great movements of justice? Join us each Sunday in October at 6:00 p.m. in the undercroft as we hear about the extraordinary things God does through seemingly ordinary people. Each week, a different panel of Christ Church members will share their stories of following God's call (even when they didn't realize it at the time!). Discover your own story in theirs, and learn how God leads us not to become somebody else, but always to be more truly ourselves: ordinary saints, through whom God does extraordinary acts of love.
