CARL BUSINESS

CARL Mentoring Program: Call for Participants

Are you interested in becoming a mentor, a mentee or a program supporter? Graphic of a person helping another person up a staircase.

The CARL Mentoring Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect mentees with mentors. The official length of the formal relationship will be one year and can be extended by mutual agreement.

Mentors:
We recommend that mentors are mid- to late-career librarians who have worked in academic libraries for at least five years. The dynamic of the mentor to mentee relationship is mutually agreed upon by the mentor and mentee. Mentoring relationships are confidential.

Mentees:
Mentees can be a graduate student, or librarian at any stage of librarianship. An interest form (completed by the mentee) is used to match mentees with the appropriate mentor.

Program Supporter:
We need librarians and library administrators who are willing to donate time to presenting or providing resources for online short workshops or webinars. All workshops or webinars will be held online and recorded for mentors and mentees to access on demand.
  • Coffee Hour: Mentees can ask professionals questions about career paths
  • Resume & cover letter writing
  • Diversity statement writing
  • LinkedIn and Orca accounts/activity
  • And more...
The Mentoring Program webpage will be updated soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to email Shamika Simpson at ssimpson@lbcc.edu.

CARL Meetups

The CARL Craftmania virtual event didn't have a large turnout, but we will have this event again. It was nice to listen to great music, craft and have a show & tell afterwards. Let us know if you are interested in attending future virtual or in-person craft events. If you have other ideas for virtual or in-person meetups, please let us know at membership@carl-acrl.org

Save the Date: 21st Century Toolkit: Empower Your Enquiry. Citrus College 9 am. Glendora, CACARLDIG-South is hosting its annual half-day Fall Program (9 am - 1 pm), December 6, 2024 at Citrus College. However, accommodations can be made if a presentation needs to be conducted remotely.

Call for Proposals:

Titled “21st Century Toolkit: Empower Your Inquiry!”, this program will offer an opportunity for library professionals to share their tools and resources for reference services. Questions to consider as you reflect on your own experiences:
  • What tools and resources have helped support your reference services?
  • What new innovations and initiatives have you tried at your library?
  • How has your library worked to improve inclusion and equity?
  • What methods of outreach have helped promote your services?
  • What things have helped with productivity, achieving goals, or fulfilling your role?
This year we’re looking for tools and resources that help foster success. In particular, we’re excited for presentations that emphasize practical takeaways!

The Program Review Committee invites proposals for the following formats relevant to the program theme:
  • Feature Presentation (20 minute presentation + 5 minute Q&A)
  • Virtual Poster Presentation (PDF, PowerPoint, or Video [5 minutes or less] presentation that will be posted with a space for asynchronous questions)
Proposals should be no longer than:
  • 500 words for Feature Presentations
  • 300 words for Poster Presentations
Presentations will be recorded via Zoom and presenters will be asked to provide their presentation materials in PDF, Word, or PowerPoint format ahead of time, so that they can be provided to attendees.

Deadline to submit is Friday, September 27, 2024.

Accepted presentations will be confirmed by Friday, October 25, 2024.
