| | | | Housing Leadership Day
📆 Friday, October 25, 2024 | 9 AM – 5:30 PM 📍 255 S Airport Blvd, South San Francisco, CA 94080
The Housing Leadership Council invites housing advocates, policymakers, developers, and community leaders from across San Mateo County to come together and explore innovative solutions to our housing and homelessness challenges.
Housing Choices will be a featured panelist in a workshop focused on understanding San Mateo County's Housing Element. We’ll be discussing key commitments within the Housing Element, specifically those that impact individuals with developmental disabilities. Topics will include the county's priority on adopting a universal design ordinance and the formalization of a reasonable accommodation policy.
This is a great opportunity to engage with experts and stakeholders dedicated to creating a more inclusive and equitable housing landscape. We hope you’ll join us in this important conversation! |
| | | | | | | | Silicon Valley Fall Festival in Cupertino
We had a wonderful experience at the Silicon Valley Fall Festival. It was fantastic to see so many people participate in our “Hoops for Housing” game to raise awareness for inclusive housing for individuals with IDD. We were also thrilled to share details about our exciting new housing project on Mary Avenue in Cupertino, which will provide 19 of the 40 units specifically for people with IDD.
The festival was filled with engaging activities, including robotics showcases, a rock climbing tower, a petting zoo, and numerous incredible vendors. Big thanks to the Cupertino Rotary and the City of Cupertino for organizing such an outstanding event! |
| | | | Salinas Housing Coordinators Secure Housing Vouchers for Those with IDD
Our Housing Coordinators in Salinas helped over 30 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities secure Housing Vouchers at the “One in 1,000” event, hosted by the Housing Authority of the County of Monterey and the City of Salinas.
This rare three-day event invited 1,000 randomly selected individuals to apply for a subsidized housing program. Those accepted received a housing voucher, which allows them to pay no more than 30 percent of their gross adjusted annual income for housing. The event was designed to ensure all available vouchers are used, as unused vouchers could result in fewer future allocations from the federal government.
Normally, securing a housing voucher can take years, but thanks to this event and our Housing Coordinators’ advocacy, many of our clients received vouchers on the spot.
One of our Monterey County Housing Coordinators highlighted the importance of being present to advocate for our clients, stating, “It’s really important to be there and advocate because maybe [our clients] would be pushed aside if we weren’t there.”
Now, our team is actively working to help those with vouchers find housing with landlords who accept them. This is a significant step forward in our fight against housing instability and homelessness for our IDD community. |
