From Fr. Mack

After my sermon this past Sunday, when I preached on Pope Francis’ call to “fast from indifference” during Lent, Minerva Haddad shared the following with me..

As we begin the 40-day Lenten journey it is traditional to give up something during this penitential season, to fast from some thing or some behavior in our lives. This Lent, we are living in a time of increased anxiety and stress, facing problems that we often feel powerless to address. As we make our way through these difficult days, how and where we focus our attention and energy can make all the difference. As Jesus said, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” So, as you contemplate your own Lenten journey, I offer you this reflection adapted from: We Dare to Say: Praying for Justice and Peace," eds. Sylvia Skrepichuk & Michel Cote.

Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling in them.

Fast from emphasis on difference; feast on what we hold in common.

Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.

Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God.

Fast from words that divide; feast on phrases that reconcile.

Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.

Fast from anger; feast on patience.

Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism

Fast from worry; feast on God’s love.

Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.

Fast from unrelenting pressure; feast on unceasing prayers.

Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.

Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.

Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth.

Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.

Fast from laziness; feast on enthusiasm.

Fast from suspicion; feast on truth.

Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire.

Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.

Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that sustains life.

Just Happened

Boudin, Saturday, March 8, 2025

Dear All,

Thank you to Yulisa/Jose, Pam, Andrew, Joel/Anna, driver Tomi and rep Hiya.  People were in line 40 minutes before we opened at 4:30 and the last person got food just after the 5:30 closing. There were no lulls in the distribution!  77 households/289 individuals received food on St Pat's parking lot!  We ran out of many items, but everyone received something.

This tops our highest distribution since April 21, 2020 when 73 households/305 individuals received REFB food here!  So, I'm guessing some of the kids grew up and moved out!

As of now, Beth is volunteering March 24.  With the increase of clients, it goes faster if we can have a total of 6 volunteers.

Those who are already on my volunteer list, please let me know if you can help Monday, March 24.

Sleeping well tonight!!!!

Do you want to improve our Church through prayer?

The Order of the Daughters of the King will be commencing a new Study Class on Zoom in April.  We already have three enthusiastic candidates.  Please join our Study and help change our church and the world through prayer.

The Class will be led by The Rev. Carol Luther via Zoom Meetings.  It will meet two times per month for about 4 - 5 months.  Please join us!  Please inform Marilyn Ganz of your interest via e-mail at
mjganz@gmail.com or call her at 707-732-1602.  Once you are a member, the DOK meets once monthly, after church for an hour, on the first Sunday of the month.

DID YOU KNOW …

• 82% of Californians say it is important to have end-of-life wishes in writing, but only 23% say they have done so.

• Almost 80% say they definitely or probably would like to talk with a doctor about end-of-life wishes, but only 7% have had a doctor speak with them about it.

• 60% say that making sure their family is not burdened by tough decisions about their care is “extremely important.” However, 56% of Californians have not communicated their end-of-life wishes to the loved one they would want to make decisions on their behalf.

(Source: California Healthcare Foundation)

Many Californians don't communicate their wishes, which can lead to a mismatch between their preferences and care. The Advance Care Planning workshop series is designed to guide individuals through the process of discerning and documenting their healthcare, end-of-life, and financial wishes.

Each module is a standalone unit, and participants may take one, two, or all three.

You might have noticed some new music in our worship for Lent last week.

Psalm Responses: We are inviting the congregation to sing the bold-faced verses along with the choir.  Here is a short video to help you understand how to sing the verses of our Psalms.

How to Sing the Verses of our Psalms!

Sequence Hymn: Our Sequence Hymn for Lent will be WLP #888, A Song of Penitence (Canticle 14). Here is a little video if you want to listen to the hymn and follow along.

This week’s anthem is Mozart’s famous Ave Verum Corpus, which will be sung in Latin.

The communion hymn “Nearer, my God, to Thee” comes from the Lift Every Voice and Sing hymnal and is one of my favorite hymns. Here is a beautiful rendition by Mahalia Jackson; I hope you enjoy it!
