Copy
From the Headmaster

Dear Parents

I wonder if you’ve ever seen Van Gogh’s portrayal of the Good Samaritan, painted in 1890? It was, in fact a copy (in his own style) of Delacroix’s painting of the same name, created about forty years earlier. In it, we see the stranger from Samaria helping the man who has been beaten and robbed on to his own horse.

Van Gogh expands the scene so that the Levite and the Priest can be seen walking off in the distance. Both artists must have known of Rembrandt’s 17th Century version of the narrative where the man is being helped off a horse at the door of an inn.

Scholars wonder whether Van Gogh was taken by this scene because he too was suffering at that time: committed to a psychiatric asylum in Saint-Remy-Provence and confined to a small cell with barred windows. Was this why he was captivated by this moment of extreme and unexpected kindness?

I wonder whether any of your Upper school children came home before half-term with van Gogh’s image in their pockets. The Registrar of Eton College, Paul Smith, handed out copies of the painting for children to keep with the message of actions being more important than words and of going the extra mile. He compared this act to those families who have turned their home over to refugees such as those families arrived from Ukraine.

As we start the second half of term, I remain grateful to Cargilfield families for their generosity with gifts of food for Fresh Start, the Edinburgh charity that supports those going hungry and without a home. This year’s harvest collection was greater than I ever remember. But I also wonder, as the nights grow longer and the weather less hospitable, whether we can maintain that spirit of generosity.

At a time of financial crisis, many families are struggling but charities like Fresh Start or Social Bite (another charity supported by members of the Cargilfield Community) are making a great difference in this area. I know that I can (very quickly) get caught up in personal matters that dominate my thoughts but I’m going to try to keep that beautiful Van Gogh image in my pocket through the second half of term to see if it will make a difference to the (very often selfish) way I think and act.

Might I also make a final plug for the bake sale happening next Wednesday in aid of the Pakistan Flood Relief Fund? Thanks to all those who are contributing to this.

As always, you can keep up to date with things here at Cargilfield by following our various social media channels which are constantly updated; the links to these are at the bottom of this newsletter. Our news page on the website is updated daily and can be accessed here.

Former Pupils' Hockey Match

After an enforced hiatus due to COVID, we are looking forward to restarting our annual former pupils' hockey match which will take place at 2pm on Friday 16th December, the last day of term.

In previous years, it has been lovely to welcome back a large number of former pupils who have been keen to play in a series of friendly hockey matches, with many former parents coming along too, and the school coming out to watch before the end of term Carol Service.

If you would like to play, please email Mr Murdoch!
Harvest Festival

It was lovely to walk down to Cramond Kirk to celebrate Harvest Festival! Harking back to the old days when the boarders would walk down in their kilts for the Sunday Service, the Upper School headed down to the Kirk and we enjoyed a lovely service taken by Rev Gilmour and it was super to have so many parents come along to celebrate with us. Well down to all the various choirs who sang and to all of our readers.

A Spooktacular Success!

The Boarders’ Halloween evening was a spooky success! The night kicked off with dressing up and getting into Halloween themed teams. First, ‘disgusting dishes’ in the haunted dining hall to guess the dishes blind folded, followed by eating doughnuts off a string. Next, a dress up competition in the chapel using team work to create a wrapped up Mummy, finishing with a Just Dance off with Halloween classics like Thriller and Ghostbusters.

Baking in the Nursery

One of the Nursery children brought in plums from her garden and the Robin's baked plum cake for snack. The children were measuring, mixing and cutting to help to make the cake! Lots of self help and life skills being devloped.  It tasted delicious too!

Former Pupil climbs Kilimanjaro

Former pupil Eliza and her friend Poppy, sister of another former pupil, reached the summit of Kilimanjaro this morning. What a fabulous achievement! They are raising money for St Columba's Hospice, a place where Eliza’s Mum received wonderful care and support.

Sporting Success at Loretto!

What a fabulous day of hockey and rugby our teams enjoyed at Loretto before half term! In the morning, the U11 Girls won their hockey tournament with the rugby boys narrowly losing in the semi final. In the afternoon, the U13 Girls also won their tournament before the day was rounded off with the U13 Boys winning the rugby 7s!

Strathallan Pipes and Drums Day

Our Pipe Band went to the Strathallan ‘Pipes and Drums’ day for Prep Schools. There were a series of workshops where the pipes and drums worked separately with the Strathallan Piping and Druming teachers to learn 3 new tunes and at the end of the day they put them together as a massed band, in a remarkably assured performance given the pieces had been learnt in such a short space of time.

Grow your own!

The Nursery children are enjoying some fabulous role play opportunities in the garden! The girls are taking their bikes to the forest to build a wall to stop the dinosaurs arriving whilst the boys climb their castle to look out for the dinosaurs, and also make soup with the vegetables they picked from the garden to feed the hungry dinosaurs!

Form 5 at Glasgow Science Centre

It was wonderful to be back at the Glasgow Science Centre after a long Covid induced break. The children were all very excited indeed to visit and I’m pleased to say that the Science Centre has become even better since our last visit with extra investment and new attractions.

Mrs Sian Mackenzie
Memorial Service on 9.12.22

Whilst many of you were able to attend Mrs MacKenzie’s funeral at the end of the Summer Term, there were many families – both present and past – who were not able to be with us to mark the life of our long standing and much loved Head of Games. We are holding a Memorial Service to remember Sian’s impact upon Cargilfield and the great contribution she made to the life of so many children, colleagues and parents.

This will take place on Friday 9th December at 4.30pm in Chapel. I hope that some of you will be able to join the School for this service and that you will alert any friends or family who have connections to Cargilfield.

The latest in our podcast series ‘Cargilfield Talks’ has been published.

Chapel: Paul Smith, Eton College

Thank you to Paul Smith, Director of Admissions at Eton College, for coming to preach in Chapel just before half term. He talked to us about the importance of our actions over our words, and how we should try to help others, just as in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, and that we always look to go the extra mile.

Halloween Fun in Nursery!

The nursery children had a fabulous time yesterday taking part in lots of halloween activities!  The children were dooking for apples, trying to find all sorts of spooky creatures in Mrs Miller's feely boxes, pinning the spider on the witch's hat and carving scary designs on pumpkins!  A wonderful afternoon of Halloween fun was had by all.
