COUNSELLING

Individual Sessions Available

People with a Cancer diagnosis can find it emotionally overwhelming.  Sometimes experiencing,  grief, anger and fear, as well as navigating the medical services, which can seem overwhelming.

Through discussions with a counsellor, you can identify both positive and troubling aspects in your life. You can focus on your goals, your relationships or particular challenges you are facing.

Counselling allows you to identify, understand and express your emotions, motivations, life choices and behaviours in a safe, objective and confidential environment. It can help with self-esteem, communication and relationships, and find ways to cope to improve health outcomes.

Our qualified counsellors are available for face to face appointments, in a Covid Safe environment, or if you wish, we can arrange a time for you by phone or Zoom.

Appointments are available on Tuesday Morning or Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.  No referrals are required.

Each 1 hour session is only $45 for Cancer Care Centre Members, (normally $90).

BIOGRAPHY SERVICE

This Biography service offers members of Cancer Care Centre an opportunity to share their life story, an autobiographical history, or record of special reflections, times or events.  It is about sharing words and affirming the value of each person's life.
The process enables messages, philosophies, beliefs, memories and culture to pass form one person to the next.

Many people also report a reduction in anxiety, depression, pain and breathlessness and an increase in self esteem as a result of undertaking this.

Our biography volunteers work one on one with you over six one hour sessions across a period of up to 10 weeks.  A printed and bound story is presented at the end of this therapeutic process.

Here is what Lorraine, a recent recipient said about her experience - "The Centre's Biography Service has been a great gift to me, because, looking back over a long life, there's a lot to say, and if I were to write it all, it would take a very long time, so the chance to speak abut it and then edit the transcript, is a great gift, and I'm very grateful to the Centre for that."

If you would to write and record your story so far.....or like more information about this service contact us on 8272 2411.

MANAGING THE EFFECTS OF BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

Breast Cancer treatments can cause a range of side effects, some are  long-term and can be physically challenging.  See what Medical Oncologist Professor Bogda Koczwara recommends:

HOW CAN I MANAGE LONG-TERM SIDE EFFECTS OF BONE AND JOINT PAIN?
Bogda: Joint stiffness and pain can be distressing side effects of aromatase inhibitors. Exercise and healthy weight seem to protect from joint symptoms, while exercise, especially yoga, can help manage joint pain. Acupuncture and painkillers such as paracetamol can also help. Your doctor may identify other conditions that predispose you to pain, recommend specialised treatments or change your hormone-blocking treatment to one that does not cause these symptoms.

IS THERE ANY DANGER IN PUSHING THROUGH FATIGUE? I HAVE BEEN TOLD MOVING MY BODY WILL HELP EVEN THOUGH I AM TIRED.
Bogda: It is a delicate balance. You do not want to overdo it, but gentle exercise is one of the best ways of managing fatigue. Ask your GP for a medical assessment to check if you have any conditions that contribute to your fatigue. Then, identify your baseline level of physical activity and work from there. If your baseline is a 10-minute walk twice a week, try increasing it to 12 minutes or maybe 10 minutes three times a week.

THE SIDE EFFECTS FROM TREATMENT ARE DIFFICULT, BUT I AM REALLY STRUGGLING WITH THE EMOTIONS I AM FEELING BECAUSE OF THEM. WHAT CAN I DO?
Bogda: It is normal to struggle through a range of emotions. The first step is to acknowledge that it is ok to feel them and consider asking for help. Peer support can be incredibly beneficial as can specific resources, such as BCNA’s excellent Upfront about Breast Cancer podcast series by Dr Charlotte Tottman. In some cases, you may need professional help.
