Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers 2015 Edition, Amendment 7, October 2022

Amendment 7 to the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP) 2015 edition provides updates on terminology and specific changes to Chapters 15, 17, 26 and 27.

COSWP provides guidance on improving health and safety on board vessels and articulates how statutory obligations should be fulfilled. The Code details the regulatory framework for health and safety on board ship, safety management and statutory duties underlying the advice in the Code and the areas that should be covered when introducing a new recruit to the safety procedures on board.

It is a statutory requirement for the current edition of the Code to be carried on board all UK ships, other than fishing vessels and pleasure craft. The Code contains essential health and safety information and it must be made available to any seafarer on board the ship who requests it.

Amendment 7 includes the following updates:

  • Throughout – Dangerous (enclosed) spaces now referred to as enclosed spaces
  • Chapter 15 - Updated with extra information about enclosed spaces throughout
  • Chapter 17- Additional information about portable ladders
  • Chapter 26 - Information added about anchoring and mooring equipment
  • Chapter 27 - Additional information about electric vehicles.

The amendment consists of loose-leaf pages that replace select pages from the main edition binder.

The Cruising Almanac 2023

The Cruising Almanac has long been the perfect onboard companion for cruising sailors. It was first published in 1909 as Sailing Directions within the Cruising Association Handbook. Almost a century later, in 2002, it became the Cruising Almanac, published by Imray, that we all recognise today.

Compiled annually by a team of Cruising Association editors and Imray, the Almanac covers Northwest Europe from the Shetlands in the north to Gibraltar in the south and from the Baltic in the east to the west coast of Ireland. Based on first-hand experience and official data, all the content, including text, plans and tidal data, is checked and updated for each new edition. Over 750 port entries sit alongside readily identifiable blue boxed passage notes, enabling easy access to the information you need, both for passage planning and whilst at sea.

2023 tide tables for 47 standard ports are included in a separate booklet. The main Almanac contains tidal stream diagrams: full tidal details for secondary ports are included with the text for the relevant port.

Updating of the Almanac continues throughout the year, with corrections published monthly on the Cruising Association website Almanac corrections page.

Brown's Nautical Almanac 2023 Edition

Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd. is proud to announce that the 2023 publication of Brown’s Nautical Almanac will the 146th Edition.

Established in 1850 on the south side of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd. soon started publishing books for the sailing ships that visited the city.  In these early days, few publications on maritime affairs were available, and its range of titles steadily grew.  A new and exciting era dawned for the firm with the first issue of Brown’s Nautical Almanac in 1876.

Every year it continues to be completely revised with ongoing care and attention given to its preparation.  Sailors will find a wealth of detailed information, including; Buoyancy, Distance Tables, Marine Safety, Navigation, Stability, Tide Tables for World Ports and Time Zones.  This list is by no means exhaustive, and sailors will find a host of useful information throughout the book.

Heavy Weather Sailing 8th Edition

In this book, former Commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club Martin Thomas brings together a wealth of expert advice from many of the great sailors of the present, including fresh accounts of yachts overtaken by extreme weather, from Ewan Southby-Tailyour, Alex Whitworth and Dag Pike to Larry and Lin Pardey, Matt Sheahan and Andrew Claughton.

The expert advice section has been updated in line with current thinking, with major new additions tackling preventing or coping with lightning strikes, navigating in heavy weather with both paper and electronic charts, the choice and use of tenders in severe weather, and special problems faced by the new generation of foiled cruising boats. For the first time the book also covers the unique challenges presented by weather in high latitudes, with more yachts crossing the Drake Passage and attempting the North West Passage. These revisions ensure that Heavy Weather Sailing is as relevant, useful and instructive for today's sailor venturing offshore as it ever was.

This is the definitive book for crews of any size contemplating voyages out of sight of land anywhere in the world, whether racing or cruising. It gives a clear message regarding the preparations required, and the tactics to consider when it comes on to blow.
